Review

This is a great addition to the Elemental World. Set after the events of Building From Ashes, it’s a brief look into the lives of Terry and Gemma.

We first met Terry and Gemma in the Elemental Mysteries series. Terry is the leader of the London vampires, and Gemma is his fiancé, and ‘daughter’ of Carwyn. They are together for political reasons – their match being both convenient and powerful.

But, behind the scenes, there is so much more to it than that.

Terrance Ramsay was the last man in the world that Gemma Melcombe thought she should want for eternity.
And Terry knew he was the only man in the world she needed.

The book starts shortly after Terry and Gemma are finally married, and is told from both of their POVs, which is fantastic, because, based on their previous appearances in the series, I actually wasn’t sure that I liked Gemma, who comes across as being really cold, and Terry seemed to be so quiet and withdrawn. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Terrance Ramsay was married to an absolute bitch, and he couldn’t have been happier about it.

Terry is awesome!! He’s confident and strong, ruthless when he needs to be, but also beautifully tender. He’s also absolutely hilarious, and knows just how to handle Gemma and her moods. He constantly teases and riles her, loving her reactions, and it’s sensational! The reveal of Gemma’s backstory explains so much, and I can absolutely understand why she is the way she is. We also get some flashbacks to when they first met in the 1800s and later interactions, which show the dynamic between them over the years. So seeing the two of them coming to understand each other more, and let their feelings out was awesome.

There’s a whole lot of steamy time in this book – probably more than the full length novels of the series! And with the passion between them (even before the romance kicks off), that is definitely not a bad thing!

There’s a bit of political stuff going on with their allegiance to Spain in doubt, and further discoveries around the Elixir and clues to who is holding it. But primarily, it’s all about the love story, and I loved it!

“Say what you want, Gemma. Curse me and punch me if you will. I know you’re spitting mad, and that’s fine. But do not lie. There was nothing about our wedding that was a sham.”
She turned her head to meet his eyes. “Bullshit. You promised to lo—”
Terry leaned down and stopped her mouth with a furious kiss. Then he pulled back a fraction of an inch and whispered, “Nothing was a sham.”

4 stars.
