3.5 “No risk, no fun” stars

Karma by Nadine Nightingale is the first book in her new PN/UF Drag.Me.To.Hell series. It has a good mix of light and heavy elements and an interesting plot that sucks you in right from the beginning.

Amanda Bishop is fortune teller trying to make enough money to leave her old life behind. She does what she must for things to go her way even if it is not alway seen as good. Amanda is also a witch and when she helps one of her clients, things are set in motion and someone from her past comes back into the picture.

Alex Remington hasn’t seen Amanda in 18 months. They have a rocky and painful past and are on just about the worst terms possible – Alex wants her dead. Working for the Paranormal Analysis Unit of the FBI as a hunter of all things evil, things didn’t go well when he found out Amanda, his then girlfriend, was a witch.

I knew why my alarm bells had gone off. Captain Righteous was no superhero. He was a freaking hunter, and I was his favorite kind of prey.

Believing all paranormal beings are evil, he would have killed her if it wasn’t for his brother, Jesse, who talked him out of pulling the trigger. Now Alex has come to Amanda to ask for her help with finding Jesse, and though Amanda wants nothing to do with Alex, she cares for Jesse so she can’t say no. She has one condition – she doesn’t want to see Alex again after they find Jesse.

As they start the trek to California, it is clear that neither want to be around the other. They both feel betrayed and are still very angry with each other. There is hostility and bickering and it is clear that they have unresolved issues. Though they both say they hate each other, it is very much apparent that they feel for each other more than they would like and the sexual tension is present in every interaction.

Amanda starts having weird nightmarish dreams that she just can’t shake and she fears they are linked to Jesse’s disappearance. While trying to get to the bottom of what is going on, they are soon thrown deeper into the world of witchcraft. Can Alex and Amanda solve the mystery behind Jesse’s disappearance? Will they come to terms with what they mean to each other or will they part ways like they planned from the start?

The heart is stubborn and reckless. Always wants what it can’t have, and never considers consequences.

Karma is full of mystery, witchcraft, and suspense. There is not much romance but the sexual tension invades each page. There were some sweet moments but not a lot of steam, and I wanted more of a romance. I assume there will be more in the books that come…at least I am hoping there is because I want a resolution between Alex and Amanda and I want to see if they can make things work between them.

Amanda and Alex are completely different and I liked them both for the most part. I love that Amanda knows who she and isn’t ashamed of what she does. She speaks her mind and goes after what she wants. I loved that she was determined to leave her old life behind and start new. I understand why she tries to deny her feelings for Alex but I wish they opened up to each other more.

Alex is selfless, and on the side of good but you can tell he is conflicted about his feelings for Amanda. I liked him less than Amanda because he was an asshole for a large part of the book even when he was the one asking for help. I am actually surprised Amanda put up with all his crap. I know he was blindsided when he found out that Amanda was a witch, but I wanted to see more of his feelings for her that are clearly there. His mixed signals that were giving me whiplash.

For a guy who claims he can shoot me in an instant, he wears a pretty depressing gray aura at the prospect of my final exit.

Amanda and Alex are keeping some big secrets from each other, and even though they are not revealed in this book, I am confident with my theories about what each of them is hiding. I can’t wait to see if I am correct! Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long for the next book to come out because I need to know what happens after the way it ended.

Overall, I enjoyed Karma and think it’s a great start to a new Paranormal/Urban Fantasy series. I look forward to seeing what comes next!
