Review

A fantastic continuation of the Fever series.

Mac is still in Dublin and, now knowing the identify of her sister’s killer, she is more determined than ever to hunt him down and take her vengeance. Fully embracing her new powers, and the brand new reality that comes with it, she is also still working with Barrons to search for the sinister Sinsar Dubh, and getting herself deeper and deeper entrenched in the dark world that she has fallen into. She is still conflicted, not knowing who to trust, but I love the way that she carries on regardless, doing her thing and trying to figure things out on her own as much as she can.

We see the return of already introduced bad guys, as well as the introduction of some new players to the field – Christian McKeltar, Dani and the sidhe-seers, and a mysterious spectre that seems to be following Mac around. Sexy fae prince, V’lane also becomes more of a presence, and I love his role in the story!

“If you think to stand between V’lane and me, and play both ends against the middle, you’ll get ripped to pieces. If I were you, Ms. Lane, I’d choose a side, and fast.”

Oh yes, Barrons is back in all of his enigmatic glory. Barrons is more of a mentor to Mac now, but is still as mysterious, powerful, dangerous and broody as ever. He is clearly keeping secrets, and Mac still doesn’t trust him, but the chemistry between them picks up really nicely. Mac’s time in Dublin and her exposure to the dark and sinister world that Barrons inhabits is changing her. She’s still strong, and stands up for herself, but she is developing more a sarcastic side, and is becoming quite the badass as she deals with everything that is going on around her. And I love it!

“Maybe you need to get a grip on your libido, Barrons!”
“Fuck you, Ms. Lane!”
“You just try. I‘ll kick the shit out of you!”
“You think you could?”
“Bring it on.”

Yes, things are getting interesting between Mac and Barrons! There is a fight scene between them in this book that had me simultaneously laughing my ass of and fanning myself at the hotness! (“I liked that shirt” – hahahaha!). Although nothing technically happens, the UST builds brilliantly the more time they spend together, the more they get to know each other, and the more they impact on each other’s lives. The sense of mystery around Barrons continues to grow, as we wonder what he is, and why he does the things he does, but his protectiveness over Mac is absolutely sensational.

“What are you Barrons?”
“The one who will never let you die, and that’s more, Ms Lane, than anyone in your life has been able to say to you. More than anyone else can do.”

With both Mac and Barrons facing huge obstacles and some really disturbing encounters, this book continues on the same action packed ride as the first one. The complexities of the world continues to grow, and KMM’s imagination brings us some fantastic new twists in her dark and edgy world. I absolutely loved it.

4.5 stars.
