Things a good neighbor can do for you:

1. Give you a cup of sugar
2. Let you borrow his lawnmower
3. Water your plants while you’re on vacation
4. Make your eyes roll back in your head with his tongue

Katya Tocci has never paid much attention to who lives next door – her career always kept her too busy. She’s a good girl, working her way to becoming the most sought after cake designer in all of San Francisco.

But even a good girl’s gotta cut loose once in a while, right? So one fake dating profile later, and she’s ready to tarnish her squeaky clean image. Little does she know, her fun time is closer to home than she ever imagined.

Throw in a neighbor who wants to corrupt her, and another who just wants to own her, and her entire world is flipped upside down.

Who knew neighbors could be so helpful?

Review

3.5 stars!

Katya is a beautiful 23 year old living in San Francisco in one of the Twin Estates apartment buildings. To help break away from her boring, yet secure life, she desires to spice things up and creates an online dating profile.

She might have been vanilla a good deal of the time, but there were other times when she wanted to be rainbow sherbet. With sprinkles on top, dammit.

Tori is Katya’s best friend who takes it upon herself to secretly update Katya’s profile. From that moment on Katya’s life will never be the same.

Liam is Katya’s neighbor and though he’s noticed her, he hasn’t made a move. She “seemed like a really sweet girl…but [he’s] not exactly a sweet guy.” Now that she’s on the dating site he wants to officially meet her and introduce her to his secret life. With one interaction, new-Katya is born.

Liam is sweet, polite, and he acknowledges what their relationship is, wild and fun. Wulf on the other hand was an asshole. Seriously. He was rude, egotistical, selfish, and blunt. He doesn’t ask, only takes. But as time went on we start to understand why he acts the way he does and I kinda warmed up to him. He gives Katya what she’s always desired – him. He was her neighbor years ago and she’s crushed on him ever since. He didn’t give her anything to hold onto when he left home, but now that he’s back, he’s changing things and let’s her know he wants her too.

These two men are different in so many ways and each give her something she needs.

“The things he brings out in me are different. It’s like … you make me expand. You open my eyes and widen my boundaries. He makes me contract. My eyes only see him and he’s my only boundary.”

Her emotions are all over the place but one thing she does know is that she likes who she is becoming.

“I’m confused and I’m learning new things about myself and I have no clue what’s going on in my head anymore, but … I think I like it. I don’t think I’m ready to go back to being boring old-Katya again. I like this new-Katya. I think I want to see what she wants to do.”

Neighbors is a unique story and the characters were interesting together. I loved that Katya and Liam had fun together. And not only when they were together together. A friendship forms that is sweet and supportive and he pushes her to try new things. Hot things. Wulf brings out another side of her and she enjoys his company and challenges her. Both men do different things to her heart and she must decide who she wants more. Only one is buried deep in her heart but is it possible to have a real relationship with the one she wants?

I really enjoyed the concept of this book and though I really liked the characters, I did not entirely love them. I liked the growth Katya went through and exploration into her new lifestyle. She went through a lot of emotions and I enjoyed watching her sort through things even though some of her actions made me want to shake her. Liam was my favorite character. He made me smile and my heart flutter. Wulf was rude and I wanted to like him more but he just didn’t do it for me.

Usually I am not a fan of love triangles but I had no problem with it in Neighbors. I am not even sure if it constitutes a love triangle to be honest. Liam was clear on his intentions and Katya was fine with the situation. She was upfront with Wulf and everything was out in the open. All three of them were onboard, so who am I to judge. It worked.

There is a big secret in his book and when it was revealed everything goes to shit. I’ll be honest, I pretty much guessed it from the start. Now that it’s out out, knowing the way things went down, I can not wait to get my hands on the next book. How can things get better after that revelation?!

Looks like little Katya Tocci finally grew up.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. Even though I didn’t fall in love with the characters, I could not put it down. It kept my attention and I was excited to see how everything would unfold. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

Spoiler
I wish I felt more of a real connection between Katya and the one she chose. I really liked the other guy much better and I wished I could make her pick him. Alas, you can’t chose who you love.

Excerpt

It was no joke.
Liam had been waiting in the lobby for her at nine o’clock, sharp. Liam Edenhoff – “but everyone calls me Eden” – he’d introduced himself again to her before guiding her out to a taxi he’d had waiting.
She felt a little nauseous. She’d chugged down another half bottle of wine, and some crème de menthe, before heading downstairs to meet him. She’d almost talked herself out of going, but she’d made the mistake of telling her roommate Tori about the whole fiasco. Apparently, Katya owed it to women everywhere (and Tori in particular) to explore this opportunity to its fullest. She’d all but been shoved out the apartment, the door slammed and locked in her face.
“Nervous?” Liam Eden-whatever-his-name-was asked her as the cab slowed to a crawl.
“Nope,” Katya’s voice sounded overly loud.
“Liar. Tonight is gonna be an interesting night, angel cake.”
“Stop calling me that.”
“What’s your last name?”
“None of your business.”
“Okay then – when the gang bang starts, I’ll tell them to call you Katya X.”
She couldn’t stop the blush from happening that time. Liam burst out laughing, then soothed the sting by grabbing her hand.
Even when they got out of the cab, he didn’t let go of her. Normally, she would’ve been uncomfortable with a stranger assuming such a familiarity with her, but this time, she was thankful for it. She held onto him tightly as they walked down a crowded street. Then they turned into an alley, and his gang bang joke didn’t seem so funny. He led her to a plain door, above which a simple, small, neon sign spelled out “The Garden”. Outside were several small groups of people, chatting and smoking. Some of them called out greetings to him, all of them using his nickname, but a large and scary looking bouncer addressed him very properly.
“Hey, Mr. Edenhoff, wasn’t expecting you in tonight. Any problems?”
“Nope, just bringing a friend to show her the place, let her see what I do for a living.”
All the blood was quickly rushing from Katya’s limbs, pooling somewhere in her stomach. None of this was a joke. He really did own the place, that much was obvious.
As Liam led her through the door, though, Katya actually felt a surge of confidence. She was still nervous, still more than a little scared, but she was okay with it. Liam seemed like a nice guy, he wasn’t going to take her into some dark room and insert foreign objects into her orifices. She could leave whenever she wanted to, whenever it got too uncomfortable. Everything was fine, and for once, she was doing something exciting. She’d have something interesting to talk about at work the next day.
Finally.

Crazy woman from a remote location in Alaska (where the need for a creative mind is a necessity!), I have been writing since … forever? Yeah, that sounds about right. I have been told that I remind people of Lucille Ball – I also see shades of Jennifer Saunders, and Denis Leary. So basically, I laugh a lot, I’m clumsy a lot, and I say the F-word A LOT.

I like dogs more than I like most people, and I don’t trust anyone who doesn’t drink. No, I do not live in an igloo, and no, the sun does not set for six months out of the year, there’s your Alaska lesson for the day. I have mermaid hair – both a curse and a blessing – and most of the time I talk so fast, even I can’t understand me.

Yeah. I think that about sums me up.
