When my eyes are closed, the monster can’t ever see me.

When I sing a song in my head, the monster can’t ever hear me.
When I pretend my bedroom is a playground where I play hide and seek, the monster can’t ever find me.

The darkness should frighten me.
I should worry I’ll find more monsters…monsters scarier than him.
But I’m not afraid.

It’s safe here.
When I’m inside of my head…

He. Can’t. Ever. Touch. Me.

*Warning: Whispers and the Roars is a dark romance. Strong sexual themes and violence, which could trigger emotional distress are found in this story. The abuse written in this story is graphic and not glossed over which could be upsetting to some. Proceed with caution. This story is NOT for everyone.

Review

5 stars!

Captivating, brutally honest, and at times uncomfortable, this addictive novel pushes the boundaries and makes you think outside the box. This story is unique and it’s complexity will have your mind and heart all over the place and your emotions running wild. Whispers and the Roars is the first book I have read by K Webster and after devouring this rollercoaster of a ride, I guarantee it will not be the last.

I whole-heartedly believe that this book is one you must go into blind in order to feel its full effect and thus this review will only touch on the plot.

Kady and Yeo were inseparable since they were nine and ten, respectively. They had a strong connection that sparked from the moment they met. Their lives were complicated at the time but they never once faltered in their friendship and later in their love. However, as they grew older, Kady felt she was holding Yeo back from pursuing his dreams. She was stuck in a dark place that she couldn’t escape and she refused to pull him down with her.

When Kady pushed Yeo away it broke both of their hearts. Being separated took a toll on them but now Yeo is back and he is determined to fix things between them. He is done letting her run from him and push him away.

I love her.
Plain and simple.
You can’t snuff out the blazing flames of love.
Soulmates don’t simply drift apart.
Twelve years has done nothing to change the way I feel about her.
The time with us separated is over.
No more hiding.
No more avoidance.
No more denying our complicated relationship.
I’m going to make this right again.

But there are people who want to hurt her and see her fail who only get in the way of Yeo’s plan.  He can’t do it alone, and thankfully he has support from others too, wonderful characters who want to see them succeed. Characters like Bones.

This book is full of mystery and confusion and it isn’t until the big reveal that everything comes together…and WOW WOW WOW…my jaw dropped when I learned what happened. It’s terrifying and twisted and absolutely heartbreaking.

Whispers and the Roars is an incredible book and I loved the way it was written. The flashbacks that slowly piece together the past were intense and after you know the truth, everything falls into place. It was amazing how one piece of knowledge can change the entire story.

Yeo and Kady were simple amazing together. Their love was all consuming. It was fierce and desperate, passionate and unconditional. The depth is truly remarkable. Kady thought she was doing the best thing for him, and Yeo, sweet Yeo. He just wanted to love her. Both Kady and Yeo were strong and brave; the obstacles they had to face were difficult yet they were determined to figure everything out.

Yeo is my drug.
And I willingly give my biggest vein to him to inject his life into me.

Kady is more than a sight, she’s a force of nature. I want her to obliterate me.

Family and friendship mean everything and this story shows the importance of  support, love and understanding. All of the characters in this book played an integral part. Without even one of them, this story would not be complete. It is not only about Yeo and Kady but rather it’s about the relationship between all of the characters and how each one affects both of them together as well as individually. Whether the characters are meant to be loved or hated, you feel intense emotion and connection to each one of them.

This story is not for the faint of heart. The things Kady endured at such a young age ripped my heart out. It made me sick to my stomach and cry for her as a child and now as an adult. I hated what Yeo was faced with as well.  This story is terrifying, dark, and gritty but it is also beautiful and honest.

In the note to the reader, K Webster says to “go into this book with an open mind…turn off what you know…[and] read this story without preconceived notions or ideas. This story, while at times can be difficult to comprehend, is a beautiful one if you see it all the way through.” Honestly, I recommend you do just that. It’s is a well-written, intense, painful story, but even when your heart is breaking and you are utterly confused and devastated, it clutches you in its grasps. It is well worth all the pain and emotion you go through to get to the end. I am so glad I stuck with it because this is a truly incredible, eye opening story that shows how love can prevail even in the deepest depths of darkness.

“I love you at your best and I love you at your worst. I love every single part of you. I always have and always will.”
