“…bad decisions always make for good stories…”

Charged is the second book in the Saints of Denver series written by Jay Crownover. It’s sexy, sweet, suspenseful, funny, and has a lot of heart.

Avett Walker has a history of bad decision making and she finally hits rock bottom. Her newest bad decision has landed her in a heap of trouble and the only person who can get her out of it is hot shot defense attorney, Quaid Jackson.

Quaid is gorgeous, hardworking, and a total badass. He wins more than loses and something about Avett has him fighting harder than usual. He works his magic and it seems like things may be looking up for her. Quickly they realize that isn’t the case when things start happening around her and the hits keep coming, knocking her down further and further. She is stuck in a dangerous mess and she’ll need to learn to trust and open up to the people who can help protect her if she wants to make it out alive. All the while, Quaid and Avett start falling for each other which only complicates the situation.

Charged is another enjoyable read by Jay Crownover, and though it starts off slow, the pace quickly picks up the further we get into the story. The characters are well-developed, the story was unique, and the romance was intriguing.

I really liked Quaid. We find out quickly that things aren’t always as they seem. He’s not the stuffy, arrogant guy wearing expensive suits and watches who feels like everything should be handed to him. He’s down to earth, hardworking, and I liked how much he changed throughout the story after Avett entered his life. I loved his determination to make a difference and when he realized what he wanted to be and who he wanted to be with, I loved that he went full speed ahead.

“I’m taking your wild and your sweet, Avett. I’m going to know what it feels like against me. I’m going to remember how it tastes and how it moves so that when I’m inside of it, I won’t get swept away by it all.”

Avett is unique, strong, and her own person. I loved that she wasn’t afraid to be who she was. Sure she makes poor decision, but she owns them and the choices she makes. I hated that she didn’t think she deserves happiness or love because that was exactly what she needed in her life. I didn’t love the fact that she knew she was intentionally hurting herself and others, yet she continued to make the same decisions. I wanted her to grow up quicker, and when she finally did I had a smile on my face and wanted nothing more than for her to get her HEA.

“You’re the best bad decision I ever made, and you are, by far, my favorite story to tell.”

Together, Avett and Quaid were a hit. Though they are completely different, including where they were in their lives, they fit together perfectly. There is an electric spark between them that made the tension thick and the chemistry hot. They challenged each other and pushed the other to be the best they could be. Avett was a force to be reckoned with and Quaid tackled her head on.

I absolutely loved Avett’s father, Bright. What a wonderful man full of unconditional love for his daughter. I also loved that we got to see snippets of Zeb and Sayer from Built and some of the guys from the Marked Men series. We are we are gifted a chapter in Church’s POV and I can’t wait to get my hands on Riveted, featuring Church and Dixie!

*Side note: I listened to the audiobook and thought it was great!
