Sometimes the best thing a good girl can do is make a bad decision.

Jessica has always been the girl with her head in the clouds and her nose in a book, only dating the “nice guys”. But when rough-around-the-edges Viking-biker-god, Mad Max, and his precocious little girl move onto her street, Jessica falls hard and fast for both of them.

Max is no stranger to women wanting to share his bed—and he’s always been more than happy to oblige them all. He’s lived wild all his life—that is, until a daughter shows up on his doorstep and he meets a redheaded angel down the block.

There’s nothing more he wants than to claim Jessica as his, to bring the gorgeous spitfire to his bed. But a man like him doesn’t get a happy ending with a woman like her. He’s got a whole other life, one he’s kept secret for good reason.

If Jessica found out what he really is, there’s no way she could love him. He should keep his hands to himself. But he’s Mad Max—he’s never done the right thing, and he’s not going to start now.

Warning: Contains a dominating alpha male who’s a lot more than he seems, and a good girl with a swirl of flavors under her vanilla.

“You’re a wish I never dared ask for, everything I ever wanted.”

3.5 stars!

I really enjoyed this book! A chemistry-filled love story between a seemingly straight-laced ‘good girl’ and a hard-living, rough biker who is a single father. This book is the third in the Break on Through series, and though I haven’t read the earlier books in the series, this one can easily be read as a standalone. It’s fun, sexy, a little bit dirty and gorgeously romantic with a bit of angst and drama, and I loved it.

Jessica is a smart, successful woman with big dreams about finding her one true love and living a fairytale happy ever after. She is a ‘good girl’ who loves her books and who dates nice guys, but it’s the rough and badass biker down the street that she really wants. Max was there for her at a time when she needed somebody, and together with his charmingly precocious daughter, they stole Jessica’s heart.

Max’s life hasn’t been easy, and he has always lived wild and taken whatever pleasure he can from whoever is willing to offer it. His life changed when his daughter was dropped off onto his doorstep and he suddenly had to become a father, but the other big shift came when he met the sexy redhead down the street. Jessica is everything he never knew he wanted, but he is a hard man and his life is complicated and he doesn’t believe she can handle everything that is him.

“I wouldn’t want to dirty you up. The kind of stains and scars I leave behind don’t come out.”

I love the set up to this romance. There has obviously been some build up in the previous book, but I didn’t feel like I had missed out on anything. The author throws us straight into a sexually-tense stand-off between Jess and Max and the chemistry between them is fantastic!

“How many times do I have to tell you not to call me Gingersnap?”
… “I hear every word, Gingersnap. I just choose to ignore the shit you say that doesn’t work for me.”

What I love the most about these two is how open they are with each other. There are issues standing in their way of being together, but they don’t hide their feelings, and the interplay between them is so much fun. Max tries to keep Jess at arm’s length, but she fights back, and it’s a fantastic dynamic.

“I can’t deny you’re fucking beautiful and I get off on the way you stand up to me. Not many women have your guts and even fewer have your brains. And I know you’ve been waiting for me to make my move. I can’t deny I’d like to ease that ache you’ve got buildin’ there for me. It wouldn’t take me long to get you all worked up under me, begging for my tongue and my dick between your legs. But as much as I may love a good lick of vanilla, I know me and I’d get bored. So, I’m trying to do the right thing here. You get me?”

“For the record?” I took a couple of steps into his space this time. “Just because a woman doesn’t like to let it all hang out doesn’t mean she isn’t wild. Don’t let the long skirts and laced-up boots fool you. If you were to get even a li’l taste of me, you would’ve discovered under my vanilla is a whole swirl of different flavors.” I grabbed his belt buckle and pulled him to me. “And all of them are very kink-friendly, just dying for the right man to own me.”

Squeee!! I love it!!! And when Max recognises Jess for the spitfire she is and can’t hold himself back any longer, it’s all on!

“Whether you’re getting in my face over something you believe in or crying in my arms over something that’s brought you to your knees, you break and mend what’s left of me every time.”

I love these two together! Sexy and fun, there’s a lot of emotion between them and I could feel it all! I loved Jess’ strength in following her heart and standing up and fighting for what she wanted, and I loved seeing Max’s softer side as he was there for his girl, protecting her heart and making it clear that he wants to build something with her. And his heartfelt declarations had me swooning.

“I did absolutely nothing to deserve a woman like you, but I promise, from this moment on, I’m going to be the man to protect every fuckin’ perfect thing you are.”

But there is so much more to Max than Jess could ever have realised. And when the reality of his life is revealed, will she be able to handle the danger that comes with it? Especially when it hits so close to home.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters, the romance was great, and there was enough drama going on to keep things interesting. The angst is minimal, realistic and handled well and I could understand and feel everything that was happening. There’s a tie-in to the previous book, but it’s all explained well and I never felt lost, and those who have read the earlier books in the series will enjoy the development for those characters.

The story moves pretty quickly and it’s really short, and honestly I would have preferred things to be a bit more drawn out so we could enjoy the anticipation and see a bit more of Jess and Max together. It feels like we got a highlight reel of the highs and lows, when I would have loved a little bit more detail to full immerse myself in their story (and an epilogue would have been nice). But I really liked it and I was happy with the way the story played out.

3.5 stars.

About the Author

A woman with the heart of a revolutionary,
The mind of a pragmatist,
And the inappropriate humor of your tipsy BFF…Born in California and raised in South Florida, I’ve moved around like a gypsy with a bounty on my head ever since. Along the way, I’ve worked as a community organizer, a professional matchmaker, an art teacher, a popular blogger, and a crisis counselor (to name a few). All the while, longing to have the guts and follow-through to do what I really wanted: to write and become a published author. That wish has finally come true and tickled pink with glitter over this good piece of fortune.

What else? Hmm…I love indie, lo-fi, complaint rock played on vinyl, wearing black because it’s slimming, the theater, well-informed optimism, happy endings (both kinds),and making those close to me laugh ’til they snort. I’m a self-admitted change junkie, loving new experiences and places, but have now happily settled in the cutest lil’ town, Vienna, Virginia.
