Synopsis

Avery Ross is living a dream. After struggling all of her life to make ends meet, a chance meeting with a powerful, darkly handsome man has catapulted her into a dazzling new world of penthouse luxury, elegant parties, and a wild, consuming passion with her billionaire lover, Dominic Baine. Nothing is out of his reach in business or in pleasure, yet the only woman he wants is her. Nick sweeps her to sensual heights she has never dared explore, commanding her body the same way he commands her heart. Yet Avery knows the fantasy she’s living cannot last.

With dark secrets and a dangerous enemy haunting her past, Avery must find a way to trust Nick with the truth before it destroys everything they share. But Nick is harboring secrets of his own as well. And when they come to light, Avery will be forced to decide if the love she feels for Nick is strong enough to endure a betrayal she may never be able to forgive.

Review

This book is the second in the 100 Series, a steamy romance trilogy featuring an arrogant, controlling billionaire and an innocent young woman with a difficult past. It may not be unique, but it’s a trope that I love, and this book continues the story of Nick and Avery’s passionately intense relationship

Nick and Avery’s relationship started with lust at first sight and they quickly fell into a passionate and all-consuming affair that saw Avery giving herself completely over to the insatiable, dirty talking sex god. And soon, what started out as no-strings became something much more meaningful as real feelings started to become involved, and these two broken souls recognised something special in each other.

The broken parts of me recognise the fractures in him, even if he hasn’t permitted me close enough to touch them yet.

This book picks up where the last one left off, with Avery and Nick entering a new stage of their relationship – one in which they openly acknowledge that they both want more – and it’s romantic, intense, and gorgeously swoony as they explore everything that is happening between them.

“I wasn’t expecting you either. I wasn’t looking to feel something like this. But then you look at me like you are right now…you take my hand, or you pull me down beneath you, and I think maybe I’ve been waiting for you – looking for you, for this, for us – all my life.”

And the sex! Holy hell the sex!!! Passionate, intense, descriptive, and there’s a whole lot of it! In fact, I actually skimmed some of the scenes because there’s just so much of it! But it shows just how much these two feel for each other, how in sync they are, and what a wonderful connection they have.

With him, I’m dancing right up next to the flames of everything I’m afraid of and I’m learning that I can actually enjoy the burn
With him, I’m learning that I crave it.

But Avery still has secrets from the past that she is keeping from Nick, and she’s learning that there is so much of his past that he is not sharing with her either. And when those secrets start to come to light, can they overcome and build something lasting, or will a devastating betrayal change everything?

I enjoyed this book. It’s written entirely from Avery’s POV, and I love the sense of mystery that gives us with Nick as we never really know what’s going on with him. It’s makes his character wonderfully enigmatic, and means that when he does start making declarations, the swooniness packs an extra punch.

“I’m not a prince. God, never hold me in that light. You’ll only be disappointed.” His touch gentles, even his gaze goes hard with intensity. “I’m not a good man, Avery. But I am the one who loves you.”

I did find the book a bit slow moving though, with not a lot really going on. There’s a bit of a mystery about Avery’s past that seems like it’s trying to build drama, but it’s predictable and I started to get annoyed with her for not just opening up with Nick, yet being so nosy about digging into his past. But I do like the way that she is not afraid to put her heart on the line for him, and be so open about her feelings.

“I need you, Nick.” I stare up into his haunted eyes. “Don’t you know? That’s where all of my wants and needs begin and end…with you.”

The love story develops really nicely and I enjoyed the deep and meaningful moments between them, and it’s all tied in really well with the growth of the characters – Avery regaining her confidence, and learning to explore what it is she wants, and Nick opening up and sharing more of himself.

The book ends on another cliffy, but given what I know about these two, it’s nothing that I’m too concerned about and is one that I look forward to seeing resolved. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with this couple in the third and final book.

3 stars.

  1. I don’t do Twitter, so I never win any of these rafflecopters, but I still like entering my few entries when I can. I especially like responding to the Blog questions. This series of books has been on my TBR wish list since before the first book was released. Book 2 sounds just as enticing as Book 1. I’m probably going to wait for Book 3 then do a binge read. I love the Billionaire/Innocent Young Woman trope! This series sounds like it will definitely satisfy my love of that trope! 🙂
