Review

Book #3 in The Arcana Chronicles, and the action, adventure and excitement continues! And amidst the horrors of a post-apocalyptic world and a terrifyingly deadly game, the time has come for Evie to make her choice.

The book begins with Evie on a mission a mission to rescue Jack from ‘The Lovers’, Vincent and Violet. The twisted twins are out for revenge on The Empress for her actions in previous games, and what better way to get to her than to take and torture the ones that are closest to her. But she won’t be going in alone. In the time Evie has been away, there have been some big changes for Jack and the other Arcana, and old alliances are picked up and new ones formed as Evie stops at nothing to save the boy she loves. But then…. there’s the other boy she loves. Death (aka Aric) has no intentions of letting Evie go, and when the Lovers strike for a second time, Evie, Jack and Death must work together to save their own and destroy the Lovers once and for all.

I really enjoyed this one! Full of the excitement, action and suspense that I felt was missing a bit from the previous book, I feel like this book got us right back into the game, and it was an exciting ride!

After the last book which was mostly Evie, I was so happy seeing her back with the bigger cast of characters. I loved seeing more of the Arcana, the dynamics between the different players is so intriguing and lots of fun, and I love seeing all of their powers coming out to play.

I loved seeing the changes in Jack after his separation from Evie. He has really come into his own, and I love the direction that his story is now taking.

And I love that we got to see more of Death – the moments where we got to see into his past were heartbreaking, and gave us more insight into this complex character. I love the different facets of him, and his smug arrogance and sarcasm was just as fantastic as his emotionally vulnerable moments that tore at my heart.

And the three of them together were fantastic. With all of the emotion between them, I was expecting fireworks, and I got it! Despite Evie’s constant moaning about which boy she wants to be with, the guys were snarky and funny (and gorgeously heartfelt), and they played off so well against each other as they fought for the girl they both love.

“Mortal, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in all my years, it’s this: lies are curses you place on yourself.”

But at the end of their adventure, Evie has a decision to make – which man is the one for her? Who will she choose?

I’m not a huge fan of love triangles, and though I suspected where Evie’s heart would lead her, her decision is definitely not an easy one. The connection she shares with both boys is palpable and intense, and I could feel her pain and heartache as she considered her life with and / or without one of them, and it’s so emotional!

It all builds to a heartbreaking climax, and then yet another hideous cliffy that is so hideous you just know that not all is as it seems – but that still has me desperately reaching for the next book.

I loved this one! 4 stars.
