What happens when the internet’s favorite playboy falls in love?

I have the best job in the world. Date beautiful women and write about it.

But I want to take it to the next level: instead of writing about my experiences make it into an online reality show.
But here is the catch. My boss wants me to share the show with a woman co-host. And he wants that woman to be my best friend and co-worker, Margo.
I’ll date beautiful women and she’ll date hot men. Sounds fair enough.

So now I have to watch her fake date hot men. I used to love going home with a different woman every night, but suddenly this isn’t as fun. Seeing Margo with anyone else is driving me crazy.

And the more time I spend with her working on the show, the less I want to keep our relationship in the friends’ zone. And the harder it is to stop myself from imagining her bent over the copier.

Things are about to get unprofessional.

Review

4.5 stars!

Unprofessional is an entertaining friends-to-lovers romantic comedy between co-workers. It is the first book I have read by J.D. Hawkins and it definitely will not be my last.

Owen and Margo met their freshman year of college. While he may have been interested in her from the start, she quickly friend-zoned him and they have been besties ever since. Both were party animals but now, years later, have they both started to settle down, her more so than him. Thanks to Margo, Owen got a job working with her at TrendBlend a year ago and they remain great friends even as co-workers.

Owen and Margo cherish their friendship too much to risk becoming anything more but a little bit of alcohol (OK, a lot) is all that’s needed to break down the walls they put up and they share an amazing night of passion. Both have reservations about pursuing something more because they don’t want to ruin things so they decide to pretend it never happened. Now they find themselves co-hosting a new dating show while their feelings toward each other are more confusing than ever. How will they navigate their friendship after they have gotten a taste of what could be?

How do you even choose between the thing you’ve wanted all your life, and the person who might be the one you’ve waited for all your life?

I loved this book. It’s got humor, heart, and steam with very little angst or drama making it a light, easy read that is sure to put a smile on your face. I loved the set up of friends turned co-workers turned lovers. The dating show that Owen dreamed up was great and the double dates he and Margo go on are hilarious and show the pull that’s between them.

I really enjoyed Owen and Margo together. They had a solid friendship from the start and the move to more was believable and was well-paced. They’re wonderfully supportive of one another and help each get through the rough times, making difficult situations more manageable. They knew exactly what to say or do to make the other feel better. Their playful banter was so entertaining and everything was easy, at least until their feelings got in the way. And wow did those feelings bring on the sexual tension and it was hot.

Owen is fantastic. His dirty mouth is a turn on as is his desire to be in control. He fights his feelings thinking the thing he had going on with Margo was light and casual when in reality it is clear that it was so much more.  Though he didn’t like relationships he still felt so much for Margo and that love shined through.

There’s no room for sense in me anymore, not when it comes to Margo. There’s no room for regret, or logic, or morality when a woman like that gets a hold of you. No room for anything but a deep, primal thirst to possess her completely. Trying to deny myself all this time has only made my need for her burn even hotter, and now it’s consumed me.

Margo is so lovable from the moment I met her. She is fun, smart, and beautiful inside and out, and she knows what she wants out of life. She stands on her own and works hard to make her dreams come true no matter what difficult decisions life throws her way. I really liked her with Owen and I understood her confused feelings towards him and loved when she recognized how she truly felt.

I see every bit of it in that moment, the weight of our history suddenly erupting in my memory like some walled-up emotion. It’s as if everything makes sense. As if everything we went through, every argument, every moment of conflict, every casual comment and conversation, all of it means something, all of it was just another step toward this place. Here, on this mountain.

I loved that there was no stupid behavior from the characters. Though they tried to deny their feelings, they remain true to each other and no one can even come close to getting their attention the way they do with each other.

The epilogue was perfect for Margo and Owen and instantly put a smile on my face. A fun lighthearted rom com to add to your list, you won’t be disappointed with this one! I definitely will be reading more from this author.

“The story might have been different, but the ending would have been the same. It’s you and me, Margo. Always will be.”
