4.5 supernaturally badass stars

God, I love diving back into Kate Daniels’ world. Funny, action-packed, supernaturally original and intriguing and completely badass with a strong, functional, chemistry-filled romance. This is one of my favourite PNR/UF series, and this is another exciting ride!

Warning that this review will be spoilery for the previous books in the series.

The eighth instalment in the series sees Kate and Curran commencing a new phase of their life together. Curran has stepped down from his role as Beast Lord, and the two of them, along with Kate’s precocious 15 year old ward, Julie, have left the Keep and are settling into living the suburban life.

“You see, the mailman saw your husband during one of his walks.”
“He’s my fiancé,” I told her. “We are living in sin””
Heather blinked, momentarily knocked off her stride, but recovered. “Oh, that’s nice.”
“It’s very nice. I highly recommend it.”

But that’s not to say that life is simple now. In fact, far from it. There are hordes of ghouls invading the city, magical creates are appearing that have never been seen before and giants are attacking. And then as if that all wasn’t bad enough, Kate and Curran are approached by Curran’s adopted sister, because Eudardo, the man she loves has gone missing. There’s a whole lot of random action going on which, upon investigation, turns out to not be so random after all.

And just to make things even more interesting, the Pack offers Curran its share of the Mercenary Guild – an organisation which has fallen into shambles and desperately needs strong, no-nonsense leadership. It’s going to take all of Kate and Curran’s strength, intelligence and pure badassery to deal with all of the mayhem and figure out what’s going on and to deal with the newest, ancient, mysterious threat to hit Atlanta.

This is another intriguing and exciting adventure for Kate. The threat is unique and the storyline is complex and well-developed. But the absolute highlight for me is that with Curran essentially unemployed, he joins Kate in her investigation and there is a lot more time spent with him. I freaking love Curran! He’s fierce, protective and wonderfully arrogant yet cool and completely badass. I honestly loved every moment with him, and the opportunity to see him and Kate in action together was absolutely SENSATIONAL!

“Try to look casual.” I pulled the top book out and put it on the desk.
“Why?”
“Because what I’m doing is illegal without a warrant, and we have about twenty witnesses observing our every move.”
Curran crossed his arms, making his biceps bulge, leaned against the desk, and fixed our audience with his stare. Everyone spontaneously decided to look anywhere else but at us. Right. Casual, my foot.
“See,” he said. “No witnesses.”

And of course, they are a romantic powerhouse. Their bantering and playfulness is highly entertaining, and their love for each other is absolutely gorgeous to see – whether it’s displayed as sarcasm and teasing, fierce protectiveness, steamy sexy time or swoony declarations, I love it all!

“Does everybody think I am an asshole?” Curran asked.
“Only people who know you or have met you.”

“Stop looking at her and you might live longer,” Curran said, his voice nice and friendly.

“I will always be there. I will walk across the whole planet if I have to.”
I closed my eyes and whispered, “I’ll meet you halfway.”

I was really curious to see how the break from the Pack was going to work with so many of the characters I love a part of the world that Kate and Curran are now separate from, but the major players are all still present and I love that we got to see so much of so many of my favourites!

“Consort,” I said. “You honor us.”
“Fuck you,” Dali said. “Fuck your shit. I quit.”

And not just the shifters, most of the characters we’ve met in previous books of the series all contribute to the action, and there are some great moments with them, and some really interesting twists and turns.

This is a great addition to the Kate Daniels series. I’m loving that this series keeps taking me by surprise, and I’m so excited to see where it all goes next.
