Dark and gritty with all the feels!

4 stars

The second book of the Chaos & Ruin series, this book continues Zeth and Sloane’s story that began in the Blood & Roses series, and I definitely recommend reading that series before diving into this one. And of course you need to read Violent Things to understand this second story arc for them.

I am the devil standing on her shoulder … I am her dark prince, leading her down paths she would never walk alone.

Zeth and Sloane are happy, committed, and as loved up and filthy as ever. Again, I loved seeing them together, and I love how functional and open they are with each other. Zeth Mayfair is a badass, plain and simple. He’s a violent and dangerous killer, but he protects those that are close to him, and his love for his family, and for the woman he claimed as his, is clear in all that he does. And there’s just something amazing about seeing such a darkly dangerous man so deeply in love.

I thought there was a limit to how much one person could care about another, but it turns out I was wrong. It turns out the depths that you can love someone are boundless. I don’t think I’ll ever reach a point where I can truly say I’ve reached my capacity for caring for this woman. It makes me weak. Vulnerable. It feels dangerous most of the time, but there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m fucking addicted to her, and I wouldn’t change that for the world.

Zeth and Sloane have been through hell, and are happily settling into some sort of peace together, but life has other ideas. Not only is as an organised crime threat from the East Coast moving in on Seattle with Zeth firmly in their sights, but DEA Agent Lowell is also in town and gunning to take down Zeth once and for all – no matter who gets caught in the crossfire.

The danger is building, and coming very close to home, and Zeth is gearing up once again to fight back and protect the ones he loves.

“Those motherfuckers will wish they’d never heard the name Zeth Mayfair. I swear, they’ll wish they’d never been born.”

The secondary storyline featuring young mechanic and part-time fighter, Mason, is woven into the book with equal importance, and I’m still gobsmacked over his storyline. Mason completely won me over with his love for his ill younger sister and his determination to do whatever he had to in order to protect and provide for her. I fell for his compassionate heart, and this book finds him stuck in an impossible situation as he fights for his sister, and for his very life as outside influences threaten everything. Mason’s life collides into Zeth and Sloane’s with even more intensity in this book, and I can’t wait to see how that is all going to unfold.

Raw, emotional, dark, gritty and heartbreaking, Callie Hart brings all the feels in this book (and yeah, it made me cry). There are some huge game changers, and life will never be the same for any of these beloved characters. I can’t wait for more.

4 stars.
