As one of Hollywood’s hottest producers, Kristian Bowen is on top of the world. With the Quantum team is fresh off a clean sweep of awards season and looking ahead to the premiere of their new film, Insidious, Kristian’s life is exactly how he likes it, complete with a stable of willing subs to tend to his every desire. Until he attends the wedding of his friend and business partner Flynn Godfrey and meets AileenGifford, the close friend of Flynn’s new wife, Natalie. Since meeting Aileen five months ago, Kristian’s carefully cultivated life has changed in ways he never could’ve expected. Now Aileen and her children are moving to Los Angeles, and he’s not sure whether to be excited or terrified about his powerful feelings for the single mom…

Aileen is coming off the worst year of her life, spent battling breast cancer while taking care of two young children. When Natalie, Flynn and their other friends encourage Aileen to move to LA and work for Quantum, she jumps at the chance to give her family a fresh start. And with her off-the-charts attraction to Flynn’s business partner in the mix, the idea of living in LA becomes that much sweeter. Until everyone shows up to welcome her and the kids to their new home in LA—except Kristian.

He can’t avoid her forever, and when these two finally see each other again, sparks fly between the single mom and the producer with a past he’s kept hidden from everyone who matters to him. When that past rears its ugly head, will he run away from the woman he loves or turn to her for comfort in the storm? And will she prevail in convincing him that he can be himself, in every possible way, with her?

Kristian and Aileen’s long-awaited story is full of heat, heart and humor, as well as appearances from all the Quantum characters readers love!

Review

Oh, the swoon!

An intense, emotional, honest and functional romance that is full of feels and plenty of hotness. This is the sixth book in the Quantum series, and the long-awaited story of Kristian and Aileen – though it can be read as a standalone. A gorgeous romance between a hot Hollywood Producer and a struggling single mother, this is true fairytale romance (with a bit of kink on the side) *dreamy sigh*.

The Quantum group are a bunch of Hollywood hot-shots with their own production company – and their own sex club where their more private needs are met. One by one they are falling, and now it’s time for award-winning Producer, Kristian, to claim the woman that he cannot stop thinking about. Aileen was introduced earlier in the series. She is the best friend of Natalie (heroine of books 1-3), and when we met her she was suffering through treatment for breast cancer. She is now in recovery from the disease and she and her two children have been embraced by the Quantum crew, and she is planning on making the move from NYC to LA to take up a job with them and to be closer to the friends she now considers family. She is particularly keen to explore her attraction to Kristian, knowing that with them both in the same city, something is sure to happen between them.

The scene is set for an epic reunion between the two, but Kristian has demons which initially have him keeping his distance. There are secrets from his past which continue to haunt him, and Aileen knows nothing about his BDSM lifestyle and need for kink. She is a temptation he knows he will be unable to resist, but he can’t reconcile exposing those parts of himself to her and it has his head in a mess.

If she is an angel sent straight from heaven, I’m the devil himself in comparison.

I have to stay away from her and her precious children, even if everything inside me calls out for her, wishing I could let her fix what’s wrong with me, wishing she could be the one to chase away the darkness and fill me with her light.

But when they do see each other, chemistry triumphs over all of those fears and their simmering attraction is finally given the opportunity to blossom as neither of them can resist their strong pull to each other. It’s sweet and passionate and so beautifully natural. But while Kristian can’t help but fall deeper for Aileen, he still holds a piece of himself back, scared of hurting her.

Everything about her is petite and delicate and fragile, which is why I can never unleash my inner beast with her. I’d break her in half.

And that just gives Aileen a chance to shine. She has faced death and she isn’t willing to put her life on hold any longer, and I love that about her! She puts herself out there, not holding back what she feels, what she wants and what she needs, and she has no qualms about claiming her man.

I summon the courage to go for what I want. Having cancer has left me less afraid than I used to be. I’m painfully aware that life is short and we’ve got to seize the moment, especially when the moment is lying in my arms, hard and hot and sexy and so tormented.
… “Time wasted is time we never get back. I don’t believe in playing games or mincing words.”

It’s a really great dynamic. Two people who are falling for each other so fast and so easily, Kristian not allowing himself to go all in but Aileen not allowing him to withdraw from her. Their openness with each other is refreshing, Kristian’s sweet, loyal and protective nature is beautiful to see, and Aileen’s honesty and willingness to be everything that Kristian needs, and her absolute faith and trust in him, is gorgeous.

I’m not used to refreshing honesty from women. I’m far more accustomed to games, intrigue, cat-and-mouse and hidden agendas. With Aileen, what you see is what you get, and I have a feeling I ain’t seen nothing yet.

And, of course, it’s all kinds of hot, with Kristian and Aileen’s intense chemistry and Kristian’s kinky lifestyle leading to all sorts of sexiness (kinky, yes, but nothing too extreme). But the steamy time is a reflection of their feelings for each other, and blends in really well with their developing relationship, giving us an all-encompassing love story that if full of swoon.

“You’re making me fall so hard for you that my head is spinning. The more time I spend with you, the more I want. The more I touch you, the more I crave you. I can’t concentrate at work or sleep or do anything but think about you. You’re making a hot mess of my life.
… It’s the best feeling I’ve ever experienced. Please don’t ever take it away from me. I’m not sure I’d survive it.”

And not only are Kristian and Aileen falling in love, but her two young children are deservedly a big part of the story, and I loved seeing them develop their own gorgeous relationships with Kristian as they started to come together as a family.

If I could spend every day for the rest of my life just like this – my arms around my children and his arms around me – I’d never want for anything.

But Kristian’s demons are dark. They are ones he hasn’t exposed to anybody in his life, and the secrets weigh heavily upon him. And when the inevitable happens, Kristian will need to learn to open himself up completely to not only Aileen, but his close friends, if he is to get through it.

“Come with me, and let’s face this head on so we can get past it and move on with the rest of our lives. Hold on to me. I’ll never let you go.”

This is a really sweet story. Kristian and Aileen are both great characters, and I really enjoyed the way they came together. The romance and swoon is gorgeous, and the inclusion of the family element with Aileen’s kids is really beautifully done. The rest of the Quantum crew all feature, with a chapter from Flynn thrown into the mix to provide some story progression for him and Natalie, and I loved catching up with them all.

An easy read with very little angst, few surprises, and an ending that left me grinning hugely, this one is all about the sexy sweetness, and I really enjoyed it.

3.5 stars.
