This is the seventh book in the Immortal Guardians series, and the story of 3000 year old immortal, Aidan. Aidan is a newer member of crew, a fierce Scot who mostly keeps to himself and who came to attention in the last book of the series when he stole a list of Gifted Ones from the Network. Gifted Ones are humans who possess special gifts, and are the only ones capable of becoming immortal – therefore giving Aidan the chance of meeting a woman who he can spent eternity with. After 3000 years on his own, he is lonely and looking for love.

His methods may seem a bit creeper-ish, but his intentions are pure and his heart is in the right place, and I loved how open he was about wanting to find somebody special. And when he meets Dana, a local psychic, even his eagerness at finding that special person can’t hide the fact that there is a true connection between them.

Dana has a strong psychic gift and she sees the future in visions. She has no idea about Immortal Guardians or the supernatural world that exists in secret right alongside her everyday life, and when she meets Aidan and feels an immediate attraction to him, she has no idea how much her life is going to change. It starts with awkwardly hot and steamy visions of the two of them together, and develops with Aidan’s true gentlemanly nature. He is sweet, gentle and beautifully caring, and a slow-moving, easy and natural romance begins that sweeps them both away with its intensity.

But Aidan is hesitant to reveal his secrets to Dana. And she has been having visions of him in danger, as well as experiencing predictions of a heartbreaking betrayal. And when the danger becomes all too real, it force everything out into the open.

“His beautiful eyes were full of dread and sorrow.
“You’re different,” she whispered.
He nodded. “Yes, I am.”
“You should have told me how different.”
A mirthless laugh escaped him. “When?”

I really liked Aidan and Dana together. Apart from the obvious secrets, they were open with each other, they fully embraced what they were feeling and went with it, and it was gorgeous to see. And hats off to Dana for her open acceptance of Aidan and his world. But as lovely as that was to see, their love story didn’t hook me as much as others in the series have. It seemed to be missing the chemistry that I love so much about these couples. And even though most of these relationships have moved fast, this one seemed super-quick. But I was happy to go along with it, and loved seeing Aidan find what he had spent so long searching for. Though I suspect that it was Dana’s contribution that kept the sizzle happen for me – she’s a smart, brave, hilariously kickass heroine who isn’t afraid to go after what she wants and protect her man, and I really liked that about her.

“Aidan ducked his head, burying his face in the crook of her neck. “Damn, you feel good,” he whispered, his deep voice hoarse with need.
It only excited her more. “What do you say we forget dinner and the movie?” she whispered, her breath shortening.
“How you tempt me,” he rumbled, tightening his hold.
“If I tempted you as much as you tempt me,” she pronounced boldly, “we would both be naked right now.”

But amidst the romance, trouble is brewing. Vampire enemies are appearing in greater numbers than ever, Gifted Ones are going missing, and Aidan’s integrity is called into question. And then there are Dana’s troubling visions. It’s going to take the full strength of the Immortal Guardian group to fight the danger they face, figure out who the bad guy really is and come up with a plan to stop them.

It’s exciting and intriguing with great action and a lot of surprises along the way. As always with this crew, there’s also a lot of laughs, and the dynamics in the group are great fun. I loved catching up with these characters, watching them interact, and seeing some great progression for their stories. This story arc is really picking up, and I loved watching it all unfold. And it’s not over yet! There’s still more that needs to happen, and there’s a feeling of the series building to a big showdown, and I’m so excited to see where it’s all going to go from here (I’m suspecting and hoping that Seth’s book is coming… which would be all kinds of awesome!).

As always, Dianne Duvall has delivered an exciting, entertaining and action-packed romance with a fantastic and well-developed paranormal aspect. This read was great fun, and I loved it.

4 stars.
