Review

4 ‘heartwrenching but I loved it’ stars!

A.L. Jackson never fails to bring the feels, and she’s delivered again with this heartachingly emotional story. The second book in the Fight For Me series, this is a gorgeous and intense romance that is surprising, dramatic and beautifully written, and I loved it.

Kale Bryant is a successful and dedicated doctor. Driven by a tragedy from his past, he is focussed solely on his patients to the exclusion of pretty much everything else in his life other than his friends – who he considers his family. His romantic life consists of nothing but one night stands, and he has no intention of ever falling in love again. And then he meets Hope.

After meeting in a bar and sharing heated stares, Hope shoots Kale down only for him to discover that she owns the coffee shop just down the road from his new work… allowing him to continue his pursuit. Hope makes it clear to him that her life is complicated and that she has no time for a relationship, but Kale is drawn to the beautiful, quiet woman and there’s something about her that he just can’t walk away from.

“Go out with me.” His gravelly voice echoed through the line … “Go out with me, Hope. Just dinner. Because I can’t fucking stop thinking about you. Couldn’t after I saw you the first time at Olive’s on Friday night. It only got worse after I saw you here Monday morning. I don’t know what it is about you…but there’s something that makes me want to figure it out.”

I could feel the chemistry between these two from the very beginning. Kale’s attraction is Hope is visceral. He wants her in a way that he has never wanted anybody else, and even though he doesn’t understand it, he follows his heart and pushes her to give him a chance.

“I don’t know how to stop thinking about you … But as hard as I try to stop it, colliding with you feels unavoidable.”

But though Hope is clearly feeling everything he is, she knows she can’t become involved with him. We know there is something serious going on in her life, with only hints pointing to what that may be, and it creates a wonderful sense of angsty anticipation.

“If I sleep with you, there won’t be any going back for me, Kale Bryant. Don’t make me fall in love with you. I don’t think either of us are ready for that.”

Hope’s secret is a big one, and when all is revealed it’s a total game changer for Kale, and for the direction of the story. I won’t go into details because I don’t to spoil anything, but OMG the feels! My heart ached at the same time it was so full as everything becomes clear, and though they have issues to overcome, everything that Kale and Hope feel towards each other only grows stronger as they follow their hearts and give in to the inevitable.

My insides fluttered when he began to stalk toward me.
Potent.
Powerful.
Persuasive.
That was what the man looked like. Persuasion and dominance and sex.
Most of all, right then, he looked like he was mine.

Emotions are running high and it’s all kinds of intense as they easily and naturally fall into a relationship that completely consumes them both. And the sexy time is sizzling as they embrace it all. And I loved it!

“What are we doing, Kale?”
His fingertips fluttered across my cheek. “I think we’re needing each other.” He blinked. “I had no idea I needed anyone or anything until I met you.”

It’s a whole world of swoon, and I melted at all of the sweet, swoony and passionate romance. But the battles that Hope is facing are extreme, testing Kale in ways he never expected, and it’s a heartwrenching journey that had me in tears. It hurt, and my heart ached at all that the characters go through but wow, it’s beautifully written. I could feel everything that they were going through, and I loved the twists and turns as it all played out, leaving me floored at the strength and courage of these characters.

This woman had undone me. Unchinked all the armor I hadn’t even realized had been there until it toppled to the ground.
An offering at her feet.

I loved this book. I loved the characters, the intensity of the romance and the unexpected direction of the story. I loved catching up with the characters introduced in the earlier books of the series, and the new characters introduced in this book bring SO much to the story! At times I found the writing to be a bit poetic for me, with lots of musings about feelings when I would have preferred a bit more dialogue, but that is just a personal preference, and Jackson does an amazing job getting us to the heart of these characters and experiencing everything along with them.

This is a beautifully written story. It sucked me in and pulled at my heartstrings and I felt everything. It’s a great addition to the series, and I’m really excited for more.

4 stars.
