4.5 stars!

Bitter Sweet Love, written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, is a novella that introduces us to the world of gargoyles and demons. Though it is a short read, it completely sucked me in, leaving me wanting more.

Jasmine is a Warden – a type of gargoyle. She wants to fly free and experience the world. But her father, the head of the NY clan of Wardens, does not allow her to do these things. Female Wardens need to be protected so that they can reproduce and keep their race alive. Because of this, Jas is not allowed to go off and explore and is almost a prisoner in her own home. Then her life shifts with the unexpected arrival of a Warden she once knew.

Dez has come back home and Jas is not very happy about it. He was her best friend, her love and he left her without so much as a goodbye. They were inseparable for ten years since he arrived at her house and then he just vanished. Jas had no knowledge of where he was or if he was even alive. All she knows is that he is back and he has “claimed” her. Jas has seven days to decide if she will accept his offer and choose to mate with him. Once a mate accepts, they will be together forever, so this is a huge decision. One that she would have jumped on in a heartbeat three years earlier had Dez not left.

When my father had announced on Dez’s eighteenth birthday that he supported a match between us, I’d never been happier than I was in that moment. I was young. And stupid. When Dez had disappeared the very next day, I experienced a heartache that I thought would swallow me whole and never spit me out. He’d been more than a crush. He had been my best friend, my confidant and my world.

Now with his return, Jas is not only hurt and angry, but she is confused as well. She still has feelings for him, but she doesn’t think she can be with him. She decides to use his claim to her benefit and create conditions before she gives him her answer. She wants to leave the compound, explore NYC, go to the mall, enjoy things a normal teenager would enjoy. Dez accepts and so their trip begins.

As they spend more time together, Jas’ feelings get stronger but she refuses to give into them until she understands why Dez left. Once she gets her answers, Jas has a big decision to make.

I really enjoyed this novella. I loved Jas and Des together. They had great chemistry and I loved all the sweet moments together. Even though it was short, I was still invested in their relationship and wanted them happy and together.

In Dez’s arms, I had found what I’d been searching for every night I took to the sky.
I was free.
I was home.

I hope we get to see more of Jas and Dez in the following books. I am looking forward to reading about Layla after meeting her in Bitter Sweet Love.
