Review

Every Last Breath is the final book in The Dark Elements series by JLA. It is so hard to wrap up a series following two strong books and I felt JLA did an amazing job with it. This wonderful finale left me with a smile on my face and wishing there was more to come. It is a book that had it all – romance, friendship, mystery, suspense, plot twists, and humor. It is full of emotion that had me swooning, sighing, and giddy at parts, as well as nervous and heartbroken. It even made me shed a few tears.

Every Last Breath takes place immediately after Stone Cold Touch ends. We know the shocking identity of the Lilin and this book focuses on how to stop it. I will not dive into the plot because I do not want to spoil anything, but this book has more than just a fight to save the world. It has character growth and true love, as well as forgiveness and acceptance. This book is jam packed with excitement that left me reading well into the night.

Layla goes through a lot in this book! Events in the past books have lead her to a new look on life.

If losing Sam had taught me anything, it was to seize life—seize everything it had to offer, including the tears, the anger and loss, but most of all, the laughter and the love.
To just seize life.

And there is the issue of the love triangle. Thankfully JLA does not make us wait until the end of the book to see who she decides. The is a major decision for Layla though because she much choose between the demon and the Warden. One is the Crown Prince of Hell and the other is her best friend and long time crush.

“Zayne’s in love with you. Roth’s in love with you.”
I inhaled sharply, but the air caught in my throat.
“Both would do anything for you—live, breathe and die for you, but you can’t have both of them, Layla.”
My hands fell to my thighs and I whispered, “I know that.”
“And you know which one is the real deal…the forever kind of love.”

And she does make the decision at 19%!

Because there was only one set of eyes I saw when I closed mine at night and when I reopened them in the morning.

Layla has so much resting on her shoulders in this book. She needs to defeat the Lilin, save Sam’s soul, and learn about who she is, all while feeling and accepting major changes in herself. She never gives up though and puts everyone else’s needs before hers.

I loved the twists and turns this book took. I loved the outcome of all the events because even if some made my heart hurt and my eyes tear up, there were so many more sweet moments that made me swoon and filled my heart with love.

“Beautiful,” he said, voice thick as he lightly trailed his fingers across my belly. I jerked, and then bit down on my lip. “You are so beautiful, Layla. And if I could pick one thing I could stare at for the rest of eternity, it would be you.”
“It would always be you.”

I was so happy with Layla’s choice. My stomach was in knots waiting for the answer and, though I liked the other guy, I was so rooting for the one she chose. JLA managed to make me really feel the love between the two of them and I was left feeling giddy with a huge smile on my face!

Spoiler

“I covet you like any good demon would.” His other hand tightened at the back of my neck. “And my desire for you increases every waking second in a way that should frighten me, but really just excites me. But most of all, I love you,” he said, and my entire body jolted at the words. He didn’t seem to notice. “I, Astaroth, Crown Prince of Hell, am in love with you, Layla Shaw. Yesterday. Today. Tomorrow. A hundred decades from now, I will still be in love with you, and it will be as fierce today as it will be a decade later.”

“I don’t think you understand what it means when a demon falls in love, Layla. It doesn’t go away. It doesn’t fade, even if we want it to. We love until death. That’s not just something we say. We love and we love once and it’s forever. No matter what.”

Fantastic series! Loved every bit of it!!

5 stars.
