Review

This book is seriously Hard Core PNR.  And I absolutely, freaking LOVED IT!

The world is so all-encompassing – humans, demons, vampires and werewolves, all inter-breeding, creating an underworld full of purebred and hybrids, all with their own powers, behaviours and politics.  It’s incredible.  And I love how it’s all slowly unveiled throughout the story.  The world is not all explained in the beginning, where you read about it and have a chance to wrap your head around it and settle in before the story really starts.  Instead, you’re thrown straight into the action, learning about the underworld, and the creatures that inhabit it and how they interact, as it forms a part of the story, and it’s amazing!

Told in multiple POVs, the plot is complex, and very involved, so I’m not even going to attempt to go into it here, but I love that the paranormal element is a very strong focus of the book and it doesn’t fade into the background of the romance.  It’s very much action-focussed, with the romance fitting into it nicely.  There are a lot of characters, and their stories all link and play out alongside the action and it’s all interwoven brilliantly.

We start off by meeting Eidolon – a passionate, honourable and dedicated doctor who runs Underworld General Hospital.  Eidolon is also a demon (an incubus no less).  His world is rocked when Tayla, an injured demon slayer is brought into his ER.  Against the advice of his colleagues, he saves her life, and the two of them are swept up in an instant cloud of lust.  It’s incredibly hot, but they are enemies, and although they don’t resist the attraction, neither of them are particularly happy about it.

“I wonder what disgusts you more, the fact that I’m a demon, or the fact that when I touch you, it doesn’t matter.”

So for a while it’s all violence and anger, lusty banter and hate sex, and it’s sensational!  Eidolon is a fantastic character, but with a deadline hanging over his head before he matures into an out of control monster, he’s on the edge.  This all adds to his mysterious sexiness, as the usually composed and restrained professional start to lose control.  And Tayla is a great match for him.    She’s a sassy, badass demon slayer with a nasty upbringing, and her own huge secrets, and I absolutely adore her!  She goes through a lot in this book, and although she is very demon-prejudiced and has moments of freak out, I found her reactions all completely understandable, and I was there with her the whole way through.

Eidolon and Tayla slowly start to tolerate each other and even *gasp* work together to investigate slayings and dodgy goings on that directly impacts on both of their worlds.  And their subsequent coming together seemed like a natural progression.  With all of the obstacles between them, it’s not an easy ride, but it played out brilliantly.

Grateful for an island in the middle of the nightmarish sea she’d been swimming in, she folded herself into his embrace and wondered how much longer she could tread water before she drowned.

Be aware that despite the bad title, and the cheesy, porn-like cover, this is not a swoony romance.  But it is freaking hot!  Eidolon and Tayla have some serious chemistry and heaps of sexy time.  Drugged sex, angry sex, passionate up-against-the-wall sex, it’s all there, and it’s all seriously hot!

“Hellboy?”
“What?”
“Touch me.  Make me forget all this.”
He was on her in an instant, took her down to the floor before she could blink.

Eidolon’s two younger brothers – sexy playboy Shade and sexy, sarcastic bad boy Wraith – play a huge part of the story, and I love how the brothers are all so different, yet they have a deep connection to each other.  Referred to as the ‘Axis of Evil’ by Gem (another brilliant character), I love their relationship, and can’t wait to get to the next two books to read more about them.

With a brilliant plotline, and tons of sex, action and gore, this is dark and dirty PNR at its finest.  I loved the world, and the story, and was hooked from page 1 all the way through to the end.  With threads of the storyline left undone, I am already making predictions to where it’s all going to go from here, and I can’t wait to continue on.

I absolutely loved it!  5 stars all the way.
