“I didn’t plan on you, Chelsea.  Or them.  And for as long as I live, you will be the best thing that ever happened to me.”

5 Jake-lovin’ stars

OMG, Emma Chase rocked this one! It’s the ending to the Legal Briefs series, and if you loved Sustained, you are going to LOVE this one! Taking us back to Jake and Chelsea’s story, it’s told entirely from Jake’s POV and is the perfect blend of sweet, sexy, funny, downright freaking hilarious!

It’s been four years since Jake and Chelsea met, and they’ve been married for two. Life with their six adopted kids is just as crazy as ever, and I loved throwing myself back into the madness!

We’ve been married for about two years and there hasn’t been a single morning when I didn’t wake with a smile tugging at my lips. Not one fucking time. Because she’s beside me – half on top of me – and the six little shits we love more than anything are tucked safely away upstairs. They’re all really good sleepers. That’s key.

Jake and Chelsea are still madly in love and totally hot for each other. The sexy time is sizzling, but the swoon is off the freaking charts.

She’s my love, my home, the solace to my soul, the keeper of my heart, the center of my entire fucking world. The only reason I really believe in my own goodness is because I see it reflected in her eyes.

But as much as I love a great love story, again, the highlight is Jake with the kids, because OMG! These kids are an absolute riot, and Jake’s no-nonsense nature with them is absolute gold! (The ‘where do babies come from’ discussion had me crying in laughter!) Jake has some truly epic moments of fatherhood, from the sweet to the practical to the downright uncomfortable, and I loved it all!

“Okay, here’s the deal – your aunt and I have noticed that you and Peter seem…pretty serious. And…we want to make sure you’re being safe.
The last word hangs heavy in the air. Like one of Cousin It’s rancid dog farts.
Riley’s face turns a startling shade of fire-engine red. “Oh my God. Is this really happening?”
I pinch the bridge of my nose. “I know, I know, it’s fucking awful.”

There are changes coming to the Becker/McQuaid household and it’s all awesome, but there are a few hiccups along the way. But even those are highly entertaining reading.

Chelsea’s arms flail out to her sides and she yells, “Who are you?”
“I’m your husband.”
“Really? I don’t remember exchanging rings with a fucking caveman!”
I lean down over her, almost nose to nose. “Then you weren’t paying close enough attention.”

Brent would say this is healthy – getting it all out in the open. That theory can go suck a dick.

It’s all awesome – all of it!

There’s a catch up with Stanton & Sofia and Brent & Kennedy, and I loved seeing where they were at. And then there’s that epilogue, set 17 years into the future, which is absolutely perfect and actually made me tear up.

Sometimes I look around and wonder, how the hell did I get here? How is this my life? It all changed so fast. But then I stop wondering. Because how this life became mine doesn’t really fucking matter. I’m just crazy-happy that it is.

This series is a definite favourite of mine, and thank you, Emma Chase, for giving us such an amazing ending. This novella was everything that I wanted and more.

5 stars.
