4.5 stars and my favourite of the series so far!

This is the fifth book in the Dark Protectors series and brings us the story of middle brother, and smartest man alive, Kane Kayrs. It’s been four years since the end of the last book. Kane is still trying to cure virus 27, the war with the demons, and the war with the Kurgens still rages on, and the Kayrs brothers are still trying to find and rescue their kidnapped younger brother, Jase.

Key to that search is demon destroyer, Amber Freebird. Kane is charged with tracking her down and bringing her back to base to help them. However when he finds her, he is stunned to find a young, feisty pacifist eco-warrior who has no idea about Kane’s world or who she really is.

Amber likes the look of Kane from the moment she sees him, however when he starts spouting off about demons and vampires, she thinks he’s crazy. But after he saves her from a brutal attack, she is faced with the evidence, and is immediately sucked into his world. She has no intention of fighting in a war or helping anybody else do so, but she wants to do what she can to help the enigmatic man… and then there is the fact that they can’t keep their hands off each other.

Running both hands through her hair, he gently tugged her head back until her eyes met his. “Amber, I like you. Against all rational thought, I like the way you think, the way you move, even the way you feel everything too strongly. And I want to have one night with you— not to relieve some stress, although it would— not to cement your help, although it might— and not to further any of my rather pressing goals. I just want to get inside you and drive you crazy until you scream my name.”

I loved watching these two come together! Sensible, logical Kane becomes somebody completely different when he lets lose, and oh my damn, it’s HOT!!! But he is still driven by his intellect, so though he knows a mating between them would give them both the power they need to face the coming danger, he doesn’t actually believe in love and Amber refuses to progress things between them without it. It’s a battle of the wills as these two opposites face off, and it’s fantastically fun to watch! Amber’s quirky feistiness is a great contrast to Kane’s calm intelligence, but their chemistry is undeniable.

He grabbed both her hands and flattened them against the blanket under his.
“Not that I mind wearing your marks, sweetheart, but a man does like to take his time.”
“I’m going to kill you.” She wrapped her legs around his hips, holding him in place. “Tomorrow.”

As always, there’s lots of other action going on with Kane’s brothers all a part of the action and we get to check in on each of the couples so far. There’s some Jase POV and his storyline had my heart pounding. And the Janie / Zane / Kalin story continues to develop, and OMG things are getting intense!!! I cannot WAIT for that book to see it all come together!

The ‘demon destroyer’ concept was interesting, and I really enjoyed the involvement of the demons as a race. They are a nasty bunch, and their powers and temperament make the world of the Realm more complex and exciting, and I love that! Rebecca Zanetti has created a fantastic paranormal world, and each book expands on that, developing it further yet bringing it all together at the same time (so don’t even think of trying to read them as standalones!). These books are really well written, and I cannot get enough of them!

I loved this book! It’s a fantastic paranormal story with a complex but easily follow-able storyline, fantastic characters who constantly sass and banter with each other and lots of kickass action. I loved getting to know Kane better and watching Amber bring him to life. They were gorgeous together, and though the romance is a slow build, it’s definitely there!

“I love you … no matter what happens later, I need you to know that. I do love you.”

I can’t wait to continue on!

4.5 stars.
