One word.
Stay.

It was all he had to do. Instead, he got on that bus and took my heart with him.

That was seventeen years ago.

I moved on. Marriage. Kids. White picket fence. Everything I ever wanted, but my husband betrayed me and I was left once again.

Alone, penniless, and with two boys, I had no choice but to return to Tennessee. He wasn’t supposed to be there. I should’ve been safe. However, fate has a way of stepping in.

This time around, the tables are turned. It’s my decision. Second chances do exist, but I don’t know if we can repair what’s already been broken . . .

4.5 swoonily romantic stars

OMG, what a swoonfest! I love a second-chance romance, and this one was beautifully emotional and so, so romantic!!! I got completely swept up in Presley and Zach’s love story and was in romantic bliss while reading it, reading passages over and over again just to take it all in – I love when that happens! Of course that means my review is going to be totally quote-whorey, and I make no apologies for that. I loved it, and I need to revel some more!

The book begins with an emotional punch when Presley’s life is turned completely upside down. Left emotionally shattered and with no other options, she packs up her life and her two sons and returns to the small home town in Tennesee that she left as a teenager, never intending to return. Her parents are thrilled to have their girl back under their roof, and though Presley is a mess, she quickly finds herself sucked back into life on the ranch with her beloved parents, brother and childhood friends.

But she never expected to see him. Zachary Hennington was everything to Presley, they had the kind of love that consumed them both, that they and the people around them recognised as life-long love. They were soul mates for as long as either of them could remember and engaged to be married until one decision changed everything. It’s been 17 years since they’ve seen each other, and from the moment they lay eyes on each other, it’s clear that everything that was once between them still burns strong.

He pulls me into his body. He breaks me apart. He puts me together. He’s my poison and my antidote.

But this is not a happy reunion. Despite the chemistry that still sizzles between them, both Presley and Zach have been so hurt by all that happened in the past. They are both feeling a lot of pain, anger and guilt, on top of everything else that Presley is still going through, but as hard as she tries to keep him at arm’s length, Zach makes it clear that he’s not going anywhere.

“Every part of my future includes you. When you came back into town, it was like my world settled. You were always supposed to be a part of my life.”

That’s all I’m going to say about the story because you really need to just dive in and read it, but OMG, the feels in this book! I could feel everything that was going on between Presley and Zach. I could feel the confusion and the pain and the anger, but most of all I could feel the love. These are two people who so clearly belong together, their love for each other is never in doubt, it’s just a matter of watching them wade through all of the hurt from the past and slowly find their way forward, and their journey was absolutely beautiful!

Zach is absolutely phenomenal. He’s a real country-boy alpha who is strong and brave with a great sense of humour, and he wears his heart on his sleeve for Presley. He holds nothing back from her, and pretty much every time he opened his mouth, I would swoon into a puddle of goo on the floor.

“We’re not a normal couple, Pres. We’ve known each other forever, and honestly, this is slow. I’ve been in love with you my whole life. I know you better than you know yourself. Don’t you get it, baby? We’re made for each other.” Zach releases my hand and cups my face. “I know every part of you, love every part of you, and there’s no rush on my part, but I don’t think we’re doing anything too fast. I think we’re just finding our way back to where we always were meant to be.”

But more than just swoony declarations, these two talk. They talk about everything. They open up, they talk about their past, their fears, their hurt, and about their feelings for each other, and they work through their issues functionally and honestly, and I LOVE that! And it’s not just Zach who puts himself out there, Presley really impressed me with how open she was about her feelings for him. She’s been through hell, and I could absolutely empathise with her, but I liked the way she dealt with it and found the strength to move forward with Zach.

“Kiss me,” I say in a hushed voice.
… “Are you sure, darlin’?”
“I’ve loved you since I was twelve years old, Zachary Hennington. You were my first kiss, my first love, the first man to touch me. I want you to kiss me, and I need to kiss you.”

The story is written mostly from Presley’s POV, but there are some chapters from Zach’s perspective, and I loved getting inside his head. He is a man determined to win back the love of his life, and there’s nothing hotter than a man desperately in love with his girl and not afraid to admit it.

It’s fucking surreal. She’s been the one thing that got away, but I’m holding her now. There’s no chance I’m going to let this end. I’ll give her anything she wants if it means I have a chance at redemption.

Loving her isn’t a choice— it’s who I am.

Of course there are some dramas to keep things interesting. Not that they’re needed because the reconnection of Presley and Zach is definitely story enough, but the drama never overpowered the book, it all ties in well, it’s all dealt with brilliantly and it all leads to a beautifully happy ending with an epilogue that had me squeeing like a little girl.

There is a wonderful cast of supporting characters that all contribute to the story, and I honestly already love them! Zach has two sexy brothers, Presley has one, and a great group of girlfriends, and with some great set ups already in place, I can’t wait for more from this series!

Corinne Michaels has done it again! An absolute swoonfest of a book, I loved it!

4.5 stars.
