Review

Diving straight into the action, this quick little novella starts with Andrea, an Aegis demon slayer, on a mission to infiltrate a vampire nest where her boyfriend (fellow slayer and love of her life), Kaden, was captured two weeks previously. If he is still alive, she is fully expecting him to have been turned, and so she is prepared, stake in hand, to find and kill him. She discovers him chained up and obviously hungry in all of his brand-new vampiric glory and instead of following through on her plans, she finds herself torn between her sworn duty, and her love for him.

When the bad guy comes along and tosses Andrea into Kaden’s cell with him, Kaden struggles against his new nature, and the two of them discover that he is still the same man – albeit now with fangs and no heartbeat. And, oh yeah, the attraction and emotion between them is definitely still there! Working together, they bust themselves out only to be faced with the problem of what to do now. Can they be together? Where can they go, and what kind of life can they have together with the Aegis certain to hunt him down and kill him as an underworlder?

I really loved this story! Kaden is a loving and honourable man who wants nothing more than to protect his girl, and Andrea is strong and gutsy, determined to fight for the future that she wants with her man. And when their quest to find their HEA leads them to New York City, they meet Tayla and Eidolon, nicely embedding them into the overarching Demonica storyline.

Although short, this little novella packs some emotion, and I found myself swept up in the sadness of Andrea and Kaden’s situation, but there is also the trademark Demonica humour, as well as action, swoony romance, and a bit of steam. While probably not a necessary addition to the series, this is a fantastic little bonus for those of us who cannot get enough of Larissa Ione’s sensational paranormal world.

Loved it – 4 stars.

And just one final note – although this is listed as number 3.5 in the Demonica series, I would recommend reading it after book 4 Ecstasy Unveiled, as there is a very brief mention of the couple from that book at the end of this novella.
