A sensational beginning to a fantastic PNR series!

There is a reason this is one of my favourite paranomal series. In fact, it was one of the first PNR series I ever read, and it rocked my world so much, it triggered my love for all things paranormal and forever altered my obsessive reading preferences.

Cat and Bones are one of PNR’s powerhouse couples. Functional, committed, badass, sexy, and deeply in love, they are a fantastic duo, and this book gives us the beginning of their story.

22 year old Cat Crawfield is a smart and sassy, self-trained vampire hunter. Having learned at 16 years old that she is half vamp herself (following an attack on her mother by a vampire which left her pregnant), she hates all vampires, thinks they are evil, and takes it upon herself to rid the world of the vile creatures. While on the hunt one night, she encounters a gorgeous but mysterious vampire named Bones, who evades her usually successful vamp capture techniques and ends up flipping her world on its head.

Bones is a vamp bounty hunter. When he discovers Cat’s unique skills and half-breed status, he suggests a mutually beneficial partnership. He will upskill her killing techniques, and help her find her vamp father (so that she can kill him) and in return she will help him capture his prey – dressing her up as “Cat, the Vampire-Killing Slut” and using her as bait to reel in and kill the bad guys.

As they get to know each other over intense physical training, vampire dos and don’ts and some hilariously dirty lessons in vampire seduction, Cat discovers that not all vampires are evil blood sucking monsters, and she finds herself falling for her mentor.

And why wouldn’t she?  Bones is all kinds of awesome. Confident, brave and completely unapologetic about who he is and what he’s done, he is definitely one of my all-time favourite vampires. He is crude, funny, deeply caring with a huge heart, and is sex on a stick.

“Kitten, you need to make a decision. Either we stay here and behave or we leave now and I promise you”—his voice dipped lower and the words fell against my lips—“if we leave, I won’t behave.”

OMG, the hotness in this book is sensational! Bones has some great moves, which he backs up with a dirty mouth and heaps of swoony endearments.

“I can’t just let us go our separate ways, Kitten, because I am in love with you. I love you.”

“You have no idea what you are worth to me.”

Cat and Bones’ relationship develops beautifully. From outright antagonism, to reluctant partnership, friendship, teasing, bantering, lust and love, it’s all there, and I adored every minute of it! They are both incredibly strong characters, but they are absolutely perfect together! There is some understandable reluctance on Cat’s part, but there is no game playing, and no stupity. They want each other, they act on it. And, with Bones’ help, Cat starts to accept who she is.

“Sooner or later, you’ll have to come to terms with yourself. You can’t wish away the vampire in you, and you shouldn’t keep atoning for it. You should figure out who you are and what you need, and then don’t apologize for it.”

Together, they are a sensational team! Not only taking out bad vamps, but also managing to track down and bring down a smuggling ring, bringing a fantastic action element to the story with a big climax that had me on the edge of my seat.

The story is fast moving, well paced, and absolutely enthralling. The characters are brilliant, the world building is well explained and easy to follow, and there is a fantastic mix of action, drama, romance, humour and steamy time – all topped off with a gut-wrenching ending that will have you grabbing for the next book. It’s a sensational set up for the rest of the series, I adored it just as much on the reread as I did the first time around.

“That’s right, luv.” Softly, but with unyielding resonance. “If you run from me, I’ll chase you. And I’ll find you.”

5 huge stars.
