Review

Cat and Bones are back, baby! I freaking love this series. And while there’s nothing new in the formula for this book, that doesn’t stop it from being a highly entertaining read with lots of laughs, action, romance and paranormal awesomeness going on.

This time around they’re up against Apollyon, a power-hungry ghoul who is doing his best to incite a species war against vampires, and he’s using Cat as his bait. So they are once again thrust back into action and intrigue as they try to find the bad guy and take him out before all hell breaks loose.

But even with all of the action, this book has a feel of things settling down a bit. Cat is settling into her life, getting comfortable with who she is and all that that means for her. And after some angsty times in the previous books, Cat and Bones’ relationship is strong and secure, and they are more in love than ever, standing strong together against the threats that they face, and they have some beautifully swoony moments.

All the rest of the world could only kill or devastate my mind and body. Bones alone held the power to demolish my soul.

“No matter what happens, you will never lose me,” he whispered. “I am yours forever, Kitten, in this life or the next.”

And, of course, a WHOLE heap of hotness, including a reversal of the famous Chapter 32 with Cat (briefly) taking the reins in the bedroom – with some very panty-melting consequences.

“Sweet bleedin’ hell, luv, this was a smashing idea.”

And through it all, the incredible Bones just continues to prove that he is MADE OF AWESOME. He’s such a badass, nonchalantly doing anything he needs to do to get his job done, but he has a huge heart. He’s also hilariously open about things that would embarrass or disgust others, and I laughed out loud at his antics so many times while reading this book.

“What exactly did Mencheres do?”
“Held you immobile with his power while I shagged you in the back of the plane,” he replied blatantly, a half shrug seeming to say,
You wanted to know.

Bones didn’t share any of my qualms about suddenly holding an arm that wasn’t attached to a body anymore. He just grabbed the ghoul by his other arm and began thumping him over the head with the loose limb. I’d heard Bones threaten to beat someone with their own limb before, but I’d always assumed that was a figure of speech. Apparently not.

And then he deadpans one of my favourite lines from the whole series…

“Ask me if I sparkle and I’ll kill you where you stand.”

The man is amazing, I can’t get enough of him.

Cat is her usual kickass, sassy self, and this time she is rocking some bizarre side effects following an encounter with Marie, the ghoul voodoo queen of New Orleans. But she is in full-on badass mode as she heads up the plans to bring down the bad guy.

Mencheres and Vlad form a part of the action, with a little bit of Spade, Ian and Cat’s team from her FBI days. And with all of the gang along for the ride there is a great amount of action – and it’s both scary, heart-poundingly exciting, and hilarious in places.

“If it makes some of you so uncomfortable you want to start shit with me about it, step right up and see if I don’t eat the hell out of you next!”
I’d meant that last part as a threat, but somewhere in my impassioned declaration of independence from hiding what I was, I’d neglected to think through my phrasing. I saw Bones raise a brow, a muffled snicker broke out from Ian, and then Vlad laughed loud and hearty.
“With that sort of invitation, Reaper, you might want to suggest the line form to your right.”
“That’s not . . . I meant eat them in a bad way,” I sputtered.
“I think you made your point, luv,” Bones responded, his face carefully blank.

This is a great addition to the series, I loved it! Just make sure you have read the Night Huntress World books featuring Spade and Mencheres before reading this one, otherwise there’s a whole lot of stuff that won’t make sense.

5 stars.
