Review

Whew! Another wild ride from Ilona Andrews!

This book is action packed from start to finish. It’s urban fantasy that sweeps you up in the horror and excitement of it all. It’s violent and gory, and the world is really complex, but the constant sarcasm and banter between characters keeps it light enough to make it a fun, highly entertaining read.

Kate Daniels is a sarcastic, badass mercenary who cleans up all sorts of paranormal messes as post-apocalyptic Atlanta sways between waves of magic and tech. And this time around, we have the added complication of a magic flare – the equivalent of a magical tsunami and a once in seven years event that unleashes all kinds of havoc as power surges into the world. Add to that a coven of witches who accidentally unleash something they have no hope of controlling, and all hell is about to break loose.

Kate gets dragged in to help unravel the mystery and save the day, and there is all sorts of badassery on display as her friends, frenemies, and some down-right weirdos team up to help. It’s fast-paced, it’s intriguing, it’s gruesome, and there are lots of laugh out loud moments along the way.

And then to make it even better, there is some fantastic sexual tension building! Badass Kate and Curran the Beast Lord (in all of his alpha sexiness) are at each other’s throats again, but there is mega-chemistry between them, and something big is brewing. I love their antagonistic relationship, and the promise of things to come has me all tingly with anticipation.

I also really enjoyed the time with the side characters – Derek, Ghastek, Andrea, Jim and even Bran all bring a lot to the story, and I’m excited to get to know them better as the series progresses.

I’m really happy I finally picked up these books after they languished on my tbr for far too long! If you’re thinking of diving in, make sure you start with book 1 – Magic Bites. I can’t wait for more!

4 stars.
