More action packed badassery and snark, and I loved it!

4.5 stars

Kate is branching out with her own PI agency and her lack of clients is making her rather desperate. She accepts the first job to come across her desk and is hurled into a mystery of a scientist who has gone missing, along with all of his work. With Andrea by her side, Kate’s investigation sees her dealing with vampires, witches and magical Russian mobsters as she tries to figure out exactly what is going on, only for her to discover that her life, the lives of her loved ones, and literally millions of others, is in grave danger. And it’s going to take an unprecedented effort to save the day.

This book is an exciting ride! There’s heaps of action and gore with multiple magical encounters and bloody battles, and the mystery is really intriguing as Kate starts to unravel the clusterfuck of exactly what she is up against. And throughout it all Kate is at her snarky best, and her sarcasm and wit had me laughing throughout the entire book. She’s so irreverent, and is such a smartass, I absolutely love her!

“Would you like to work here with me?”
Andrea stared at me.
“We have no clients and the pay is shit.”

I dipped my head so I could look into his eyes. The monster at my table looked ready to cry. I’d managed to make a teenager depressed. Maybe I could shoot some fish in a barrel for an encore.

The story builds brilliantly as the full extent of the evil is revealed, and the added pressure of one of Kate’s loved ones fighting for their lives brings an emotional element to everything. And it all combines to create huge anticipation and excitement for the big finale, which is absolutely epic as unexpected allies come together to battle the bad guys.

And then there is Curran *dreamy sigh*. The added element of Kate’s relationship with Curran brings a new dynamic to the book which I love. The chase is over, they are now together and committed, but they are still finding their way together, and whether they are talking, arguing, fighting (literally) or being all awesome with each other, I loved every moment of it.

“I’d missed him so much, it almost hurt. It started the moment I left the Keep and nagged at me all day. Every day I had to fight with myself to keep from making up bullshit reasons to call the Keep so I could hear his voice. My only saving grace was that Curran wasn’t handling this whole mating thing any better. Yesterday he’d called me at the office claiming that he couldn’t find his socks. We talked for two hours.”

They are such a strong couple, and even though they’re not all mushy and romantic, what they have is incredibly special, and they make that very apparent. I love the way they are together.

“If I fought for them and was crippled, they would all say nice things, and then they would replace me and forget I was ever there. You would stay with me. You would take care of me, because you love me. I love you too, Kate. If you ever became hurt, I would not leave you. I’ll be there. Wherever you want ‘there’ to be.”

There are some game changers in this one, with a few hints at what is still to come, and I am so excited to read more. This series is so much fun, I’m loving the ride!
