I love the premise, I love the writing, and I love the characters and their relationship.

Emma is desperate for a baby, and being all alone with no prospects of a man coming into her life, she is willing to do anything to make her dream come true. When the sexy, man whoring player from work, Aidan Fitzgerald, finds out about her situation, he offers to be her ‘sperm donor’. Aidan has wanted Emma since he first laid eyes on her, and after being brutally shot down by her when he made his move in the past, he is happy to be her baby daddy, as long as it remains strictly business, there are no romantic entanglements, and they try the old fashioned way. Emma is shy, and definitely not one for casual sex, but with no other prospects in sight, she accepts.

“A MWF sex schedule? How efficient,” he mused.
“Please be serious.”
A wicked grin flashed on his face. “Fine, pencil me in. I’ll be ready and erect whenever you need me.”

I love how matter of fact they are about the whole situation. Although they joke about it, it’s not just a ‘wham, bam, thank you m’am’ thing, Aidan is considerate and thoughtful, especially in the bedroom, and he makes huge efforts to make Em feel comfortable. You can see the friendly affection that they share from the very beginning (he even calls her ‘babe’ *dreamy sigh*), and obviously there are attracted to each other physically, and when they get together… HOT DAMN! There is some serious chemistry, and their sexy time is steaming!

Desire burned in his eyes as he brought his hands up and laced his fingers around the back of his head. “Okay then. I’m all yours, babe. All you have to do is take me.”

Damn!

I love these two characters. Yes, Aidan is a known womaniser, but deep down he is a bit of a sweetheart!! And the way he changes for Emma – being there for her when she needs him, doing all he can to help her, and being completely committed to getting her pregnant, is gorgeous! I love Emma and how determined she is to achieve her dream. At the start of the book she is very shy and nervous – knowing this, Aidan constantly teases her and tests her limits – but she slowly gains confidence and starts to give back and good as she gets, and there is some fantastic banter.

“You see I’ve been taking these tests to tell when I’m ovulating and when I’m most fertile. And well…it’s now.”
“Oh, so you came up here for a fuck?”
Emma cringed. “Do you always have to be so crude?”
He chuckled. “I’m sorry. Would you prefer I call it an afternoon delight?” he teased.

And later…

“After all, the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach” …
When Aidan snickered at Grammy’s admonishment, Emma nudged him in the stomach with her elbow. “Don’t make me tell her the way to your heart is through your dick,” she whispered.

The development of their relationship from friends to ‘more’ is slow but realistic, and there is lots of book time dedicated to them just being together – and I loved every minute of it. I particularly loved the way the dialogue is written, it’s so real, and with the two of them being open with each other (about most things at least), they have some fantastic conversation. Their arrangement starts out more like a business deal, and neither of them have any intention of getting involved, but of course it all changes as their steamy bedroom sessions turn into more and they become a part of each other’s lives (and families – both of which are totally awesome) and their feelings start to shift. Emma very quickly falls head over heels for Aidan, but holds back for fear of scaring him away. Aidan is shocked when he starts to feel something for Emma, and even though he is willing to try for more, he still has commitment issues. So there is still a lot to be resolved between them, but they do have some absolutely beautifully gorgeous moments together.

And then the ending… OMFG that ending! I was screaming at my kindle with frustration. No, no, no! Oh God, whyyyyyyyyy!!!!

Spoiler

My heart absolutely broke for Emma! But I’ve also gotta say, as much as I wanted to kill Aidan for what he did, I kinda felt awful for him too. I think I would have been angrier with him had he been totally heartless, but the fact that he acknowledged he was being a dick, and felt terrible about it, made me feel slightly less murderous towards him.

“When Aidan glanced at himself in the bathroom mirror, he shook his head in disgust. “Yeah, that’s right, drive the stake into her heart even deeper, you fucking asshole,” he muttered under his breath.

At this stage I’m not 100% sure what is driving him, and why he is battling his love for Emma so much, there’s gotta be something deeper there. I can’t wait to dive into the next book to see his reactions to what he has done and the resulting chaos, and then watch him get his shit together and begin the most epic of epic grovels to get his girl (and his baby) back.

There is a glimmer there are the end though, with both of them gearing up to deal with the big ‘thing’, which gives me hope… and then there’s this…

Spoiler

“She’s not my wife… yet”

…so I’m really excited to see how it all unfolds.

Seeing other reader’s reactions to the ending was what made me wait to read this book until I knew I had the next one available. And I am soooo glad that I did!! And being the wussy, cliffhanger-avoiding reader that I am, I off to start it right now!

Loved it – 4.5 stars.

The Proposition
