They have an intense backstory, with Deck being the best friend of Georgie’s older brother, Connor, both soldiers until Connor was killed in action. Since then, Deck has been a force in Georgie’s life – protecting her and being there for her whenever she needs him – even if she may not necessarily want him there. And underneath it all there has been epic chemistry and sexual tension sizzling away between them. But with Georgie’s aggression, and Deck’s standoffish-ness, the two of them haven’t been able to get it together…. until now.

I miss him constantly, but when he was here, it was…painful.
Another year gone. Another year filled with lies.

I enjoyed finally getting to explore everything that is going on between these two. It’s clear that Georgie wants Deck, she has made no secret of the fact, openly and frequently taunting him with overtly sexual flirting. But Deck is holding back – he made a promise to Connor not only to protect his little sister, but to keep his hands off her, and he has been battling with that, as well as Georgie’s lifestyle for years now.

Georgie lost herself after Connor’s death, seemingly spiralling out of control with parties, drinking, and random hook-ups. As much as he can, Deck has been the one to drag her out of bad situations and sort her out. But he knows this isn’t her. He knows there is something deeper going on, and he is determined to figure out what Georgie is hiding. So in true alpha style, he comes barging into her life yet again, this time making his intentions known in no uncertain terms – “I’m going to fuck you, Georgie.” (*snort* yes, really) – and Georgie, who has been in love with Deck for years, and has even named her vibrator after him, finds herself powerless against him.

“I don’t know what the fuck is going on with you, but I’m finding out. In the meantime, you’re being locked down. Bullshit has ended.”
“Deck!”
“No, Georgie, I’m done.”

So a very intense, very sexed-up relationship begins. Deck claims Georgie as his own, and has no intentions of letting her go. But along with his big, tough, badass alpha exterior, there is also a vulnerability to him, and that vulnerability is Georgie. He truly cares for her, has done since she was a young girl, and he is determined to get that girl back.

“I lost you a long fuckin’ time ago.” His fingers tightened and he stared at me for several seconds before saying quietly, “Come back to me, Georgie.”
My breath hitched.
His eyes softened. “Baby, come back to me. Stop pretending. Stop hiding. Trust me.”

These two have obviously loved each other for years, and I enjoyed getting to see them come together. Not only is there sex – lots and lots of hard, rough, dirty talking, wall slamming sex. But these two, strong, aggressive characters are softer with each other, and liked seeing them open up and to each other.

Maybe it was crazy loving someone as much as I did her, but Georgie was the good in me. Without her, I was sure I’d sink into the darkness of my mind and never emerge. She gave me the light to keep coming back.

But all is not what it seems and Georgie is keeping some big secrets which prove to have huge ramifications, and before they know it, they are all caught up in something bigger and more dangerous than they ever expected.

As with the other books I have read by this author, this is a really big book. There are so many different aspects to both Georgie and Deck’s stories, and the reveal is slow, and with many hints dropped throughout the book as to what is actually going on, I found it a bit unclear at times. I guess that was the intention, with the ‘mystery’ part of the story being a big feature but, again like the Tear Asunder books, it felt a bit OTT with the drama and the action.

It does, however, set up the rest of the series nicely. As seems to be the way with ex-military men in romance novels, Deck has opened a ‘security’ business with his fellow badasses.

The men who worked for Deck were either ex-military, ex-gang or ex-fucked up and dangerous. Wherever they came from, they all had specialized skills of some kind needed for the work they did, and most of it was illegal. But from what I knew, it was eliminating this world of some of the worst assholes.

I enjoyed the time that was spent with Deck’s boys and there are already a couple of good set ups there for more books.

So overall this is a fast-paced, action-filled, sexy romance with a bit of drama and mystery/suspense on the side. Full on, yes, and probably a bit OTT for me, but the love story between Georgie and Deck ties in well with everything else that is going on.

3 stars.

The
