Full of action, excitement, drama, and a beautiful romance between an incredible anti-hero and a broken-but-still-fierce heroine, the feels were intense, and I was hooked from start to finish. I loved it.

Kai and London’s story has been woven into both the Tear Assunder and Unyielding series, but honestly when I picked up this book I couldn’t remember any of that! I had forgotten a lot of the details in the previous books, and I realized that pretty quickly, so I went back and skimmed the ending of Perfect Chaos and it was then that everything clicked together, and I was right into it. Bottom line – this is definitely not a standalone, and I would suggest reading at least Perfect Chaos before making a start on this one (I didn’t even remember about the Torn From You tie-in until I read it happening in this book – nicely done, Ms Rose!).

In the events at the end of Perfect Chaos, we met Kai when he was desperately searching for London after she had been taken and held prisoner by evil corporation, Vault. This book begins shortly after Perfect Chaos ended, with still Kai on his mission to save his girl.

“London is mine and you fucked with that. Vault is going to pay for what it’s done.”

Kai is a supreme badass who exists in a dark and dangerous world. He was taken as a child and trained by Vault to be a cold, ruthless killer, and though he sits mostly on the ‘bad guy’ side of the fence, we soon learn that he has a big heart behind all of that badassery. The beginning of this book is intense and gets us right into Kai’s mindset before taking us back years earlier to the beginning of Kai and London’s story so we get to see everything that led to this point. I love this set up in a book – when you know what’s coming, and you read with excitement as you see the story unfold, as well as a huge sense of anticipation just waiting on what is to come. And I love the way this one unfolded.

Kai and London’s meeting isn’t ordinary, to say the least, and their initial interactions are definitely not romantic, but there is a chemistry between them, and when given the opportunity to act on that, they both jump at it.

“I’m going to fuck you. And I want to hear you scream when you come and I won’t stop until you do … And I can fuck you for a very long time.”

Nashoda Rose writes great sex scenes, and the steamy time between Kai and London is hot, passionate, and really intense (and there’s lots of it!). Kai is a dirty talker, and the connection between is explored really well as all of that hotness develops into emotion, and their feelings become impossible to hide. But Kai’s life is full of danger, and as much as he wants London, he doesn’t want to pull her into that. So he does what he thinks is right, only to find out that it’s too late, and London has already been drawn into the darkness of his world.

“I’ll always come for you, braveheart.”

The book is written in dual POV, which I loved, but I really liked that we got Kai’s perspective as he searches for London. She is literally put through hell, and while that is made clear, we don’t get all of the devastating details, which I appreciated. Instead, we see what Kai goes through while he fights to save her, and then the aftermath of London’s experience as he fights to make her whole again.

I wasn’t prepared to see her broken.
My brave scientist ruined.
They’d ruined her.
She’d been fuckin’ perfect. She was brave and cute and caring and fuckin’ perfect, and they’d ruined everything she was.

Kai’s battle to bring London back from the trauma of everything she had been through is beautifully written. Heartbreaking and emotional, yet still with that edge of alpha badassery, he fights determinedly for her, and this is where the love story really kicks into gear as they start to open up to each other.

“I want all of you, London. Every single piece of you and I want you to give it to me.”

London’s bravery in the face of all she has been through was amazing, and the way that she could still trust Kai and open herself up to him showed incredible strength of character. She was written really well, and I could understand and empathise with everything that she was feeling. I really liked her.

Being with Kai was dangerous, but it was also the safest place I could be. And the only place I wanted to be.

But Vault still has Kai in its clutches, and there are still bad times ahead of them. It will take Kai teaming up with another bunch of badasses (Deck and his boys) to bring down hell, make his girl safe, and put an end to Vault once and for all. It’s all very intense and exciting and reads like an action movie at times, and I loved watching it all play out. Deck and Georgie both play a part in all of the excitement, as does Tristan, and his side story which was brief, but very enjoyable. There’s also a fantastic lead into the next book, and again that looks to be an intense read and I’m really excited to get my hands on that one.

But while the action is a big part of the story, the focus is definitely on the romance between Kai and London, and it was beautifully written. Despite the circumstances, it’s actually a very functional relationship, and I loved that when the story comes back to the present, there is no unnecessary drama. It all unfolds brilliantly, and I was so proud of both Kai and London for being so strong – individually and as a couple – yet allowing themselves to be so vulnerable with each other. It was so gorgeous to see, and I loved that they were both able to be there for each other.

“Loving you is like finding the light. I can’t ever lose that again, baby. I won’t.”

“Honey,” she whispered and it was as if she handed me the world with that single word. “When are you going to let someone save you?”

And Kai melted me with the way he cared for London. He is the perfect mix of tender lover and protective, alpha badass, it makes for a surprisingly swoony read, and I lapped it up.

I didn’t know what love felt like, but what I felt for her was indescribable with a single word. It was more powerful. It was all consuming. “London, what we are can’t be explained with a word, only experienced.”

Swoooooooon!

I have a weird relationship with Nashoda Rose’s books. I found the first few to be overly dramatic, with too much going on in the story, but though I didn’t love them, I still found myself reaching for the next book when it became available. And I’m really glad that I did because her last few books have been her best yet – well written with just the right blend of action, romance and drama, which still gives us an intense and exciting read but that doesn’t feel OTT. I’m really excited to see what she has in store for us next.

I loved this one – 4.5 stars.

An Advanced Review Copy was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in
