My little sister is such a drama queen. <\/span>Literally.<\/span><\/i> Jade is an actress on Broadway.
\n<\/span>She clapped her hands together, applauding the students who\u2019d just bravely put themselves out there to try out for <\/span>Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat<\/span><\/i>. \u201cYou all did such a great job today! Tomorrow we cast the roles and start our first rehearsal. This is gonna be epic!\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade had come out to the Bay Area to visit our family for the week and offered to volunteer at the youth center where I worked. Since there wasn\u2019t enough time to produce an entire play, Jade decided to direct the kids in one key scene from the musical that would be performed later in the week.
\n<\/span>I loved my job as director of the arts at the Mission Youth Center. It was just about the only thing going right in my life. The only downside was the fact that these walls were haunted by memories of my ex, Elec, who used to be a youth counselor here. That was how we met. He\u2019d loved his job, too, until he quit so that he could move to New York after we broke up. He moved to be with <\/span>her.<\/span><\/i> I shook my head to shoo away thoughts of him and Greta.
\n<\/span>Jade grabbed her purse. \u201cI need to go back to your place to use the bathroom and have a quick bite.\u201d
\n<\/span>I\u2019d just moved into a new apartment that was only a few blocks away from my job. The lease had finally run out on the place I\u2019d been renting with Elec across town. Even though my ex sent me his half of the rent for the remainder of our lease after he\u2019d moved out, I couldn\u2019t wait to vacate that place; every corner of it reminded me of him and of the miserable months that followed our break up.
\n<\/span>My place was right in the south central section of the Mission District. I loved the culture in my new neighborhood. Produce bins and a variety of cafes lined the streets. It was also a mecca for Latin culture, which was great, except for the fact that it reminded me of Elec, who was half Ecuadorian. Little reminders of the guy who broke my heart were everywhere.
\n<\/span>Jade and I strolled down the sidewalk, stopping at a fruit stand so that she could buy some papayas for an afternoon smoothie she planned to make back at my apartment. We also ended up getting two coffees to go.
\n<\/span>I bent back the opening on my coffee lid as we walked. \u201cSo, little sis, I never thought we would be in the same predicament at the same time.\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade had recently been dumped by her musician boyfriend.
\n<\/span>\u201cYes. But the difference is, I feel like I have way more distractions in my life than you do. It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t think about Justin. It\u2019s not that I don\u2019t get sad, but my performances keep me so busy that it\u2019s almost like I don\u2019t have time to wallow in it, you know?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cI told you I\u2019ve been doing these phone therapy sessions, right?\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade took a sip then shook her head. \u201cNo.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cYeah. I found this psychologist who specializes in trauma from failed relationships, but she\u2019s in Canada. Anyway, we do phone sessions one night a week.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cIs it helping?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cIt always helps to talk things out.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cYeah. But no offense, you don\u2019t seem any better for it. Anyway, you can talk things out with Claire or me. You don\u2019t need to pay big bucks to talk to a stranger.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cNighttime is really my only time to talk to anyone. You\u2019re performing at night, and Claire is too wrapped up in being a blissful newlywed. Besides, she\u2019s never had her heart broken. She listens, but she doesn\u2019t get it.\u201d
\n<\/span>Our older sister, Claire, married her high school sweetheart. Even though the three of us were close growing up in nearby Sausalito, I\u2019d always felt more comfortable opening up to Jade.
\n<\/span>When we arrived at my building, my sister stopped to sit on one of the benches in the corner of the fenced-in courtyard. \u201cLet\u2019s sit for a bit, finish our coffees.\u201d Her gaze wandered across the grass to my shirtless neighbor. \u201cOkay\u2026who\u2019s the hottie in the beanie defacing the property?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat is it with you and beanies?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cJustin used to wear one. That\u2019s why I love them. Isn\u2019t that sad?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cThat <\/span>is <\/span><\/i>sad.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cThis from the girl who still sleeps in her ex\u2019s shirt.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cIt\u2019s comfortable. It has nothing to do with Elec,\u201d I lied. It was the one thing I allowed myself from him. It made me sad, but I wore it anyway.
\n<\/span>\u201cSo\u2026who is that guy?\u201d
\n<\/span>I didn\u2019t know my neighbor\u2019s name, but I\u2019d see him once in a while doing spray paint art along the wrap-around concrete wall that surrounded the property. It served as a vast canvas. His spray painting was true art, definitely not what would be considered simple graffiti. It was an elaborate mix of celestial and geographical images. This guy just kept adding different artwork to the wall gradually. It was a work in progress. I could only assume he planned to paint the entire circumference of the property, as much as the wall space would allow.
\n<\/span>\u201cHe lives in the building, next door to me, actually.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat is he doing? They allow him to do that here?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cI don\u2019t know. The first time I saw him out here, I thought he was vandalizing the property. But no one seems to care or stop him. Every day, he adds to the mural. It\u2019s actually quite beautiful. But it doesn\u2019t match his personality.\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade blew on her coffee. \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cHe\u2019s not very nice.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cYou\u2019ve talked to him?
\n<\/span>\u201cNo. He\u2019s just not friendly. I\u2019ve tried to make eye contact, but he walks right by me. He has these two big dogs, and they\u2019re pretty mean. They bark all of the time. He walks them every morning.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cMaybe he\u2019s like a savant. You know, really good with art. Or maybe he\u2019s a genius but with limited social skills. What do they call that\u2026Asperger\u2019s?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cNo. He communicates just fine. I\u2019ve seen him yelling at a few people. I\u2019m pretty sure he doesn\u2019t have that. This guy is just not friendly. He doesn\u2019t have Asperger\u2019s. He\u2019s just an ass<\/span>.<\/span><\/i>\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade chuckled. \u201cI think you should totally stop by his place with some warm muffins wrapped up in a basket. It\u2019s the neighborly thing to do. Maybe he\u2019ll loosen up\u2026or loosen <\/span>you <\/span><\/i>up.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cMuffins, huh? What\u2019s that code for?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cMuff\u2026muffins. Same thing. If I lived here, I\u2019d be all over that. But I <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span><\/i> live here. You do. And you totally need a distraction. I say\u2026he\u2019s it.\u201d
\n<\/span>I admired the guy\u2019s broad shoulders and tanned muscular back as his arm moved the spray can up and down. \u201cGod, doesn\u2019t he remind you of Elec, though? Arm tattoo\u2026dark hair. Artistic. Basically, that\u2019s the <\/span>last<\/span><\/i> type of guy I\u2019m going for at this point.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cSo, if someone looks like or seems similar to Elec, then they\u2019re automatically disqualified? They\u2019re destined to do the same thing Elec did? Is that how you think? That\u2019s just stupid rationale.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s fucked-up. But the last thing I want is to be with someone who reminds me of him in the least.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cWell, that\u2019s a shame, because Elec was freaking hot, and this guy\u2026is even hotter.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cCan you remind me why we\u2019re discussing this? The dude doesn\u2019t even say hello to me. He\u2019s not signing up to be on this delusional version of <\/span>The Bachelorette.<\/span><\/i> He\u2019s not interested.\u201d
\n<\/span>Neighbor Dearest suddenly wiped the sweat from his forehead, took off the mask covering his nose and mouth, and dumped the spray cans into a black drawstring sack. He slung it over his shoulder and just when I thought he was going to walk away and out of the courtyard, he began to walk in our direction. Jade straightened in her seat, and I hated that my pulse raced a bit.
\n<\/span>His eyes were focused on me. I wouldn\u2019t call it an angry stare, but he wasn\u2019t smiling. The sunlight beamed directly into his blue eyes, which glowed and really stood out against his tan skin. Jade was right; this guy was truly gorgeous.
\n<\/span>\u201cBlueberry are my favorite,\u201d he said.
\n<\/span>\u201cWhat?\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cMuffins.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cOh.\u201d
\n<\/span>Jade snorted but stayed silent, letting me take the brunt of this humiliation.
\n<\/span>\u201cAnd I\u2019m not anti-social or a savant. I\u2019m just a good old-fashioned prick\u2026with supersonic hearing.\u201d
\n<\/span>He smirked and walked away before I could say anything.
\n<\/span>When he was safely out of earshot\u2014for real this time\u2014Jade sighed. \u201cAngry guys are the best in bed.\u201d
\n<\/span>\u201cYou just can\u2019t stop yourself, can you? Haven\u2019t you done enough damage? I\u2019ve always told you that you\u2019re loud when you think you\u2019re whispering. Now there\u2019s proof\u2026at my expense.\u201d
