I love Mia Sheridan, she’s an auto-buy author for me, and she’s given us something really different with this one. Grayson’s Vow is a lot lighter than her other books, with fantastic characters, some great humour, and a really entertaining story, but still with the emotion that I have come to expect from her. It’s all beautifully put together, and I was captivated from the very beginning – devouring this book in one sitting.

“Forget the prince and princess. I always imagined the real story was between the witch and the dragon.”

Kira Dallaire is desperate to create a new life for herself. Out from under the thumb of her controlling father and running from a past she wants nothing to do with, she finds herself at rock bottom, so she decides to pick herself up and take matters into her own hands. Grayson Hawthorn is also a desperate man. After enduring the worst, he is trying to get his life in order and fulfil a vow he made to his deceased father, and to do that he needs to make a success of his family’s vineyard.

When Kira shows up on Grayson’s doorstep with a proposal that will give them both what they need to move forward with their lives, he sees no other option but to accept. And so, the two of them are thrown together into a marriage of convenience for financial gain, with a plan to divorce after 12 months. Simple, right? Hahaha. Not so much…

I love the premise of a hero and heroine who hate each other, only for that to turn to mad lust and eventually into love, and the chemistry between these two is electric! From the very beginning there is a spark of physical attraction between them, but they assume the worst about each other and are instantly antagonistic. Kira and Grayson’s early conversations are full of sensational sarcasm and barely-veiled snark. And when their attraction for each other starts to make its appearance, it works to build the UST brilliantly!

I waved my hand. “I’m sure you’re aware that women find you… appealing of some unknown reason.” I shrugged.
“Appealing?”
“Hot, panty-melting,” I elaborated.
He stopped and I did as well, turning to face him. The look on his face was filled with amusement. “This topic interests me. I’d like to stop and discuss it further.”

They have both been through a lot in their lives – both betrayed and treated badly by those that should have loved them, and that has made them wary of relationships so neither of them are keen to go diving into a new one. But with each chemistry-laden interaction you can see that they are going to be dynamite together, it’s just a matter of sitting back and watching it build, waiting for the inevitable to happen.

“Truce. Come here so we can shake.”
“You come here,” she challenged.
I smiled slowly. “Meet in the middle.”

I really enjoyed the development of the relationship between these two. From hatred and distrust to a friendship that is teasing and playful, and then into a romance that is fiery, passionate and emotional. It’s a beautiful ride as they open up to each other and start to heal.

Grayson has been through hell, and has retreated into his own world, determined not to let anybody in to save himself from being hurt again. It takes a lot to tear down his walls, but the bright and bubbly Kira manages to do just that.

You can’t shut off one emotion without shutting off all your emotions. You have to feel the pain if you’re going to feel the joy.

I really enjoyed Kira as a heroine. She has risen above all that happened to her, forcing herself to bounce back and always finding the fun and wonder in life. She’s smart, sassy and sarcastic and has a wicked sense of humour, I loved her!

I shouldn’t be delving more deeply into Grayson’s hidden torment. It’d only make me love him more. Wasn’t that just the way with women? And I was no exception. What was sexier on a man than great abs and a heart full of hidden torment? They should bottle it and sell it by the truckloads. Or perhaps write a book: “Abs and Hidden Torment: A Man’s Guide to Bagging Babes.”

I am a mad fan of Mia Sheridan’s writing. I love her style, I love the way her writing flows, and I love the way I so easily get lost in her stories. For some reason this one didn’t hit me as emotionally as her other books. Yes, the constant dragon/witch comparisons and name calling got a bit tiresome, but I think it was the back and forth that got to me the most…

Spoiler

One misunderstanding and reunion I can cope with, when it happens again, I get irritated – especially when it’s irrational, unreasonable, and comes with a whole heap of shit-talking without allowing the other person to even explain. Seriously, not cool.

… I got annoyed, and seriously wanted to start smacking people, but the grovelling and subsequent swoon did go some way to making things better, and then there’s a beautifully sweet and swoony epilogue that left me with a big grin on my face.

She was everything to me: my dreams, my weakness, and the person who made me want to be strong. She was the one woman who showed me I mattered, that I was wanted. That I was enough.

So not as epic as I was hoping (maybe my expectations were too high based on my mad love of Mia’s other books?), but I still really enjoyed this read. I loved the main characters, I loved the side characters, and I thought the dynamics were absolutely sensational! Mia’s writing is top-notch as always, and the emotion and romance is gorgeous.

4 stars.

Check out our Author Spotlight on Mia Sheridan.

Buy: Kindle Ebook | Paperback Review 4 stars I have been so excited for the release of this book.
