\u201cI know.\u201d I shake my head at the calamity of it all.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd you\u2019re an even worse feminist.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAgreed. That\u2019s something I need to work on. You\u2019ll help me, won\u2019t you? We should spend as much time together as possible\u2014every minute of the day and night. I\u2019m hoping you\u2019ll rub off on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah pushes my shoulder. \u201cYou\u2019re just hoping I\u2019ll rub you off.\u201d<\/p>\n

Now it\u2019s my turn to laugh. Because she\u2019s not even a little bit wrong.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut there\u2019s never been anyone? Really?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah shrugs. \u201cPenny and I were tutored at home when we were young . . . but in year ten, there was this one boy.\u201d<\/p>\n

I rub my hands together. \u201cHere we go\u2014tell me everything. I want all the sick, lurid details. Was he a footballer? Captain of the team, the most popular boy in school?\u201d<\/p>\n

I cover my eyes with my hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis name was Davey. He wore these adorable tweed jackets and bow ties, he had blond hair and was a bit pale because of the asthma. He had the same glasses as me and he had a different pair of argyle socks for every day of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI am so disappointed in you right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was nice,\u201d she chides. \u201cYou leave my Davey alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shake my head. \u201cSo what happened to old Davey boy?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was alone in the library one day and he came up and started to ask me to the spring social. And I was so excited and nervous I could barely breathe. And then before he could finish the question, I . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t realize I\u2019m leaning toward her until she stops talking and I almost fall over.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou . . . what?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sarah hides behind her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI threw up on him.\u201d<\/p>\n

And I try not to laugh. I swear I try . . . but I\u2019m only human. So I end up laughing so hard the car shakes and I can\u2019t speak for several minutes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019d had fish and chips for lunch.\u201d Sarah\u2019s laughing too. \u201cIt was awful.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOh you poor thing.\u201d I shake my head, still chuckling. \u201cAnd poor Davey.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d She wipes under her eyes with her finger. \u201cPoor Davey. He never came near me again after that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCoward\u2014he didn\u2019t deserve you. I would\u2019ve swam through a whole lake of puke to take a girl like you to the social.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiles so brightly at me, her cheeks maroon and round like two shiny apples.<\/p>\n
