Your sister wouldn\u2019t want that for you.\u201d His voice turned velvety and soft. Soothing.<\/p>\n Anya nodded. \u201cI know. But she was my sister. We shared blood and part of a childhood. She took me trick-or- treating when I was five, and it\u2019s one of my best memories. Then when I needed help as an adult, she didn\u2019t hesitate. She came to me right away, like family. She was the first person I really cared about in far too long, and it hurts like hell that I got her killed.\u201d<\/p>\n He breathed out, the emotion in his eyes deepening.<\/p>\n She swallowed. \u201cI have to do this for her. Either you understand that or you don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhy don\u2019t you just let us handle it?\u201d<\/p>\n She pressed her point. \u201cI could, but you need me. I\u2019m the bait.\u201d Inwardly, she winced at the description. That wouldn\u2019t help her to convince him. \u201cAlso, here\u2019s the deal. This could be a long op. At some point, you have to leave and deal with whatever is haunting you from your past. When you do, I\u2019ll just challenge him again, and next time you won\u2019t be around to assist.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s extortion,\u201d Heath said, amusement curving his lip.<\/p>\n She grinned. \u201cApparently I\u2019m getting quite good at it.\u201d<\/p>\n Heath shook his head. \u201cYou\u2019re putting me in an untenable position, baby.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cNo, I\u2019m not.\u201d She shrugged out of his hold. Finally. \u201cI\u2019m not yours to protect, Heath. We\u2019re not together, and we\u2019re not responsible for each other.\u201d The words sliced through her even as she said them. \u201cYou\u2019ve been more than clear on that score.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s something here, Anya. Maybe something real and lasting, if I get everything done I need to do.\u201d<\/p>\n She blinked. \u201cWhat\u2019s that?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe less you know the better. Believe me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhat a bunch of bullshit. Go back to your \u2018This is fake\u2019 proclamation,\u201d she all but yelled. \u201cYour position is one of work . . . and this is just work.\u201d<\/p>\n His chin lifted. \u201cYou think this is just work?\u201d The tone\u2014low and filled with tension\u2014zinged through her body.<\/p>\n Her legs trembled with the urge to take a step back. \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWant me to prove otherwise?\u201d His eyes darkened to the color of the sky right before midnight hit.<\/p>\n As a threat, as a warning, it was damn good. But she\u2019d gone too far to give in now. \u201cYou can\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0 Yeah, she\u2019d just waved a red flag in front of a bull.<\/p>\n He didn\u2019t move a muscle. His focus on her was so absolute, she wanted to squirm. \u201cYou\u2019re into challenging dangerous men these days, aren\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n She kept her stance. \u201cYou\u2019re not all that dangerous, Heath.\u201d<\/p>\n His smile stole her breath.
