But she did manage to rescue her sister, Paige, although she is now a freaky-ass Frankenstein-looking ‘monster’ with razor sharp teeth and a craving for blood. And poor Raffe has had leathery, freaky-ass demon wings transplanted onto his back after his were stolen by evil Belial, and now everybody who sees him thinks he’s a demon.

In short – nobody is where I want them to be, and it’s a hell of a ride as things get even weirder!

The apocalypse has left mankind scattered, and while Penryn initially finds herself back in the heart of the Resistance camp, she once again sets out to rescue a missing loved one. Along the way she is captured by a bunch of evil angels and their evil minions, and is taken prisoner where she gets an insight into exactly what the angels have planned for the human race. And let me tell you, it is freaky!

The whole time she is journeying, she can’t stop thinking about Raffe… and neither could I, which is why I was disappointed by the disturbing lack of Raffe in the story. We get flashbacks of him (which, again, are a little weird…

Spoiler

– from the POV of his sword… I kid you not!

but hey, it’s Raffe, so I’ll take it!), but as much as I love Penryn, I really missed him and the sensational dynamic between them that was set up so beautifully in the last book.

Penryn is a total badass. She’s only 17, but she’s brave, and big-hearted with a fantastically sarcastic sense of humour. And as much as she is a badass, she is also just a normal girl trying her best to protect her family and survive in horrific circumstances.

“I’m not usually a girl who hopes for a damsel-in-distress rescue but no matter the odds against it, this would be a freakin’ fantastic time for Raffe to come and sweep me into the sky.”

It’s a long wait, but yes, Raffe finally makes his appearance, and it’s actually a bit of an epic moment. God, I love that angel! He’s still a total smartass, and the chemistry between them is still incredibly strong, and between their fantastic banter, and sweet, tender moments, I have to believe that somehow these two are going to find a way to be together despite their forbidden feelings for each other.

“She wasn’t made to be alone.”
“I guess none of us are.”
Our eyes meet and an electric tingle runs through me.
“She missed you,” I say in a whisper.
“Did she?” His voice is a soft caress. Twins fighting for the resistance, they are freaking hilarious! And although we only get a little bit of time with them, every moment was gold.

“Are zombie girls allowed to talk?”
“If they’re cute and willing to do zombie-girl mud fights”
“Duuude. Just … fresh from the dead.”
“Only, with ripped clothes and stuff.”
“And hungry for breeeeasts.”
“He means brains.”
“That’s exactly what I meant.”

There’s a lot going on in this book, and yeah, a lot of it is really weird, but it moves at a great pace. I found the frequent chapter breaks to be a little off-putting – seriously, this book is 314 pages, and there are 75 chapters, that’s an average of 4.18 pages per chapter. And with pretty much all of the chapters ending on a bit of a cliffhanger, that’s a lot of build up, and it broke into the flow a little bit. But there’s a lot of action happening, and a lot to take in. There’s also fair few coincidental happenings, but it’s a fantasy book, so I was content to let it all slide.

Overall, this was a great follow up to Angelfall. It has a different feel to the first book, but I think Susan Ee did a great job progressing the story. And although it’s far from over, the ending isn’t a devastating cliffhanger, and I am content with the way it finished – although I’m still desperate for more, and can’t wait to see what how it’s all going to end.

4 freaky-ass stars.

Penryn & the End of Days series

<div data-post-id="21678"
