I loved the first book, Joss and Wes’ story was sweet, romantic and unexpected with lots of twists and turns, and I was left with so many questions after I finished it. This book jumps right back into the story (though I found that I did have to go back to the first book to remind myself of some of the details), and the emotion is instantly intense as we finally get some resolution to that unforgettable cliffhanger.

Once again Wes was there for Joss when she needed him the most, but unlike previously where her scars were only emotional, now the scars are physical and her life has been left forever changed. She has worked hard to find herself again, and now she needs to find the boy that she loves in order to truly move forward and have her happy ending.

I can’t go into detail about this story without spoiling it, but I really enjoyed the relationship between Joss and Wes. Their connection to each other is beautifully explored, their reunion is emotional yet realistic, and I loved how deeply in love they are, and all that they meant to each other.

“I don’t need a hero, Wes.” I say again, pressing our foreheads tight again, my thumbs both drawing soft lines along his jaw. “I just need you.”

But as much as this is a romance book, the personal journeys of both Joss and Wes are a big part of the story. They have both been through an enormous about of drama and trauma in their short lives, but it makes for some great character development as the two emotionally damaged kids from the beginning of the series finding happiness and contentment that neither of them had ever dreamed of.

“It’s like for once we’re in charge and this is exactly how our story is supposed to go.”

The story is slow paced and highly descriptive, and I found it a bit overly wordy at times. There is also a slight supernatural element that I wasn’t expecting, and for me it felt a bit strange. There were hints dropped in the first book, but it’s a bigger focus of this book and while I was reading I had no clue where it was all going. I’m usually a fan of all things paranormal, but in this case it felt a bit weird coming out of nowhere the way it did. And it contributed to an already complex storyline to unnecessarily over-complicate the story, and I just wasn’t a fan of that particular part of the story.

But as a character-driven story, I enjoyed this one. Joss and Wes have been through a lot both individually and together, and though it seemed a bit over the top with the drama, and the whole ‘almost-paranormal’ thing didn’t work for me, I did like seeing them work through their everything they were faced with and get their happy ending.

3.5 stars.

Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author in
