Blue Echohawk doesn’t know who she is. She doesn’t know her real name or when she was born. Abandoned at two and raised by a drifter, she didn’t attend school until she was ten years old. At nineteen, when most kids her age are attending college or moving on with life, she is just a senior in high school. Tough, hard and overtly sexy, she is the complete opposite of the young British teacher who decides he is up for the challenge, and takes the troublemaker under his wing.\u00a0<\/span> Find\u00a0A Different Blue<\/em> on GOODREADS<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n I stood and moved next to Wilson but kept my eyes trained on the sculpture so that I didn’t have to make eye contact with anyone in the room.\u00a0 The class had fallen into stunned silence.\u00a0 Wilson started by asking some basic questions about tools and different kinds of wood.\u00a0 I answered easily, without embellishment and found myself relaxing with each question.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhy do you carve?\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMy . . . father . . . taught me.\u00a0 I grew up watching him work with wood.\u00a0 He made beautiful things.\u00a0 Carving makes me feel close to him.\u201d\u00a0 I paused, gathering my thoughts.\u00a0 \u201cMy father said carving requires looking beyond what is obvious to what is possible.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Wilson nodded as if he understood, but Chrissy piped up from the front row.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d she questioned, her face screwed up as she turned her head this way and that, as if trying to figure out what she was looking at.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWell . . . take this sculpture for example,\u201d I explained. \u201cIt was just a huge hunk of mesquite. When I started, it wasn’t beautiful at all.\u00a0 In fact, it was ugly and heavy and a pain in the ass to get in my truck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Everyone laughed, and I winced and muttered an apology for my language.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cSo tell us about this particular sculpture.\u201d Wilson ignored the laughter and continued, refocusing the class. \u201cYou called it ‘The Arc’ \u2013 which I found fascinating.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI find that if something is really on my mind . . . it tends to come out through my hands.\u00a0 For whatever reason, I couldn’t get the story about Joan of Arc out of my head.\u00a0 She appealed to me,\u201d I confessed, slanting a look at Wilson, hoping he didn’t think I was trying to butter him up.\u00a0 \u201cShe inspired me.\u00a0 Maybe it was how young she was.\u00a0 Or how brave.\u00a0 Maybe it was because she was tough in a time when woman weren’t especially valued for their strength.\u00a0 But she wasn’t just tough . . . she was . . . good,\u201d I finished timidly.\u00a0 I was afraid everyone would laugh again, knowing that \u201cgood\u201d was not something that had ever been applied to me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The class had grown quiet. The boys who usually slapped my rear and made lewd suggestions were staring at me with confused expressions.\u00a0 Danny Apo, a hot Polynesian kid I’d made out with a time or two, was leaning forward in his chair, his black brows lowered over equally black eyes.\u00a0 He kept looking from me to the sculpture and then back again.\u00a0 The quiet was unnerving, and I looked at Wilson, hoping he would fill it with another question.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cYou said carving is seeing what’s possible.\u00a0 How did you know where to even start?\u201d He fingered the graceful sway of the wood, running a long finger over Joan’s bowed head.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere was a section of\u00a0 trunk that had a slight curve.\u00a0 Some of the wood had rotted, and when I cut it all away I could see an interesting angle that mimicked that curve.\u00a0 I continued to cut away, creating the arch.\u00a0 To me it looked like a woman’s spine . . . like a woman praying.\u201d\u00a0 My eyes shot to Wilson’s, wondering if my words brought to mind the night he had discovered me in the darkened hallway.\u00a0 His eyes met mine briefly and then refocused on the sculpture.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cOne thing I noticed, when I saw all your work together, was that each piece was very unique \u2013 as if the inspiration behind each one was different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n I nodded.\u00a0 “They all tell a different story.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAhhh.\u00a0 Hear that class?\u201d Wilson grinned widely.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I didn’t even tell Blue to say it.\u00a0 Everyone has a story.\u00a0 Everything has a story.\u00a0 Told you so.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The class snickered and rolled their eyes, but they were intent on the discussion, and their attention remained with me.\u00a0 A strange feeling came over me as I looked out over the faces of people I had known for many years.\u00a0 People I had known but never known.\u00a0 People I had often ignored and who had ignored me.\u00a0 And I was struck by the thought that they were seeing me for the first time.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Escapist Book Blog is not responsible for this giveaway.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Amy Harmon is a\u00a0<\/span>Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>USA Today<\/span><\/i>, and\u00a0<\/span>New York Times<\/span><\/i>\u00a0Bestselling author.
