I\u2019m a big fan of Kylie Scott, and was so excited when I saw she was writing a YA book (and will you look at that cover\u2026 I freaking love it!). And from the moment I opened this book, I was completely and utterly hooked. It\u2019s a unique story which is raw and emotional, holding nothing back, and I feel like I\u2019ve been on a ride with these characters and I\u2019m still not quite ready to let them go. This book is a mix of sweet, funny, dramatic, traumatic and romantic \u2013 a weird combination, but it works beautifully, and I really enjoyed this one!<\/p>\n

Edie is a 17 year old girl on summer vacation when she is caught up in a brutal armed robbery. The experience is terrifying, leaving her injured and traumatised, and feeling lost and alone, while at the same time stronger, not willing to put up with crap and keen to experience life in a whole new way. When the bullying at her snobby private school becomes too much, she asks for a transfer to the local public school, and that\u2019s where she runs into John Cole \u2013 the boy who saved her life that night, and the only one who understands what she\u2019s feeling.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s the only one who gets me. Who knows what it was like, going through what happened that night \u2026 And he\u2019s the only one I know for sure would risk himself to keep me safe.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

John has a difficult life and an even worse reputation, but like Edie, that night left him changed and he is trying hard to pick up the pieces and set his life right. Their initial interactions are strained to say the least, but there is a connection between them that draws them together. They get each other, they understand what the other one is feeling, and they soon learn that although they are very different, they need each other to lean on as they move forward.<\/p>\n

An unlikely but powerful friendship develops as Edie and John find comfort and strength in each other, Edie supporting John as he fights to improve his life, John right by Edie\u2019s side as she strives to experience all that life has to offer. But as their attraction to each other grows, things become complicated.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not going to delve any further into the story because you just need to experience all that is Edie and John\u2019s journey \u2013 the sweet, the fun, the drama and confusion, and even the angst. It wasn\u2019t always easy, and the teen angst is expected from two kids in their situation, but the pacing is perfect and there\u2019s great character development as they figure it all out and the romance flows naturally out of it all.<\/p>\n

I loved these characters. Flawed but real, there\u2019s a real sense of them coming into their own and finding their place, and I enjoyed that part of the story. The side characters are also fantastic and bring a lot to the story, and I thought the portrayal of high school life was realistic and really well written.<\/p>\n

This is a raw but realistic story which is more than just a romance, and the additional themes of family, friendship, overcoming trauma and finding yourself are tied in really well. There are a few surprises along the way but it ends in a good place, and I really enjoyed the ride.<\/p>\n

It was us against the world, forever and ever.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But this is going to have to fall under definitely none of your damn business, so go away please.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re talking about it.\u201d He advanced a step.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo we are not.\u201d And I retreated.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were going to let a complete stranger touch you.\u201d Advance.<\/p>\n

Retreat. \u201cPeople do it all the time. You do it all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you don\u2019t,\u201d he said, taking the final step, backing me up against the side of his car and getting all in my face. \u201cEdie, this is your first time we\u2019re talking about. Isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, and it\u2019s going to be messy and painful and probably horribly embarrassing and I just want it over and done with.\u201d I tried to meet his eyes but failed, settling for a spot on his right shoulder. \u201cYou\u2019re not a girl; you wouldn\u2019t understand. Also, last time I checked, you\u2019re not the gatekeeper of my hymen, John Cole. So back the fuck off.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said nothing.<\/p>\n

Deep, calming breaths. \u201cLook, someday I\u2019ll meet someone I really like and we\u2019ll have a deep and meaningful relationship and go at it like bunnies. But I don\u2019t want to be the dumb virgin in that scenario.\u201d<\/p>\n

He slowly shook his head.<\/p>\n
