Instead of basking in the glory of her article’s success, she’s on the run from a powerful man who wants her dead. To stay safe, she’s forced to trade one bad situation for another. Stuck in the Montana wilderness, she’s secluded from anything resembling civilization or the modern-day world. The only good thing about her situation is the gorgeous mountain man assigned to protect her. Too bad he isn’t the slightest bit interested in a city girl like her.

Beau likes his life quiet and simple. Give him a peaceful day hiking in the woods with his dog, and he’s a happy man. He has no use for large crowds, noisy cities or dramatic women. So when a hotshot reporter rolls into town, dragging her big-time problems with her, he should have run for the hills. Instead, he volunteered to keep her safe. Bringing her into his world won’t be easy, but if he can convince her that Montana isn’t as terrifying as she believes, they might just be the perfect match.

Review

4.5 stars!

I lost myself in this book! Devney Perry has taken us Back to Prescott, Montana, for the fourth addition to her Jamison Valley series, giving us an intriguing, heartfelt story with a beautiful, slow-burning love story. The last book of the series, The Lucky Heart, gave us a hint of what we are in for with this book, with a bit of build up taking place, however this one can be read as a standalone – just know that characters from previous books do appear – and I loved Sabrina’s journey, and Beau absolutely stole my heart.

Sabrina is in a world of trouble. As an investigative journalist, she went to extreme lengths for her most recent story, but it’s one that meant a lot to her, and it’s one that has put her in the path of a Russian organised crime group, and she’s now a target. After a brutal attack, she escaped to the home of her best friend, Felicity, in Prescott, and was quickly whisked away to a secret hiding place in the mountains, a secluded outpost where she will hide out until the heat dies down. And the man responsible for her safety is local ranger, ever-dependable Beau.

That spark in his eyes was a beacon calling to my soul. Telling me to dock my fucked-up ship in his port and he’d make sure it didn’t sink.

The chemistry between Sabrina and Beau sizzles from the very beginning. But not only is Sabrina in no state to be starting something, she and Beau are from completely different worlds. She is a city girl who loves the fast-paced and convenient lifestyle she has in Seattle, he is a country boy who loves his wide open spaces with friends and family in Prescott who depend on him. On top of that, their time together will be limited to Sabrina’s stay at the outpost. Nothing about them together makes sense, and nothing can ever happen between them, no matter how much they may wish otherwise

My attraction for Beau wasn’t fading, not in the slightest. The new-guy flutters were morphing into all-consuming desire. My heart would fall for this sweet and thoughtful man. It was inevitable. And it would be the forever kind of fall. A disastrous descent that would splatter my heart on the pavement and leave no possible hope for repair.
Because a future with Bea was impossible.

The sexual tension in this book is sooooo good! And more than just the physical, the emotional connection that develops between Sabrina and Beau is absolutely gorgeous. They get to know each other, they don’t hold anything back, and when Sabrina is at her lowest, Beau is there to catch her, and every moment of it is just beautiful.

“You’re not ready. When you are, you’ll be the first to know.”
My head fell and I spoke to my knees. “I don’t know what that means.”
“I know. You just have to trust me.” His thumb hooked under my chin and lifted it up. “Christ,” he muttered. “Don’t look at me like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like your heart hurts. It’s killing me.”

“Trust me. Please?” he asked. “I’ve got you.”

*clutches heart*

And through it all their openness and honesty is fantastic. They don’t hide how they are feeling, they accept it, they just realise that they can’t do anything about it. And that just makes their situation so much more intense.

“Will you promise me something, Beau?”
“Sure.”
“Before I leave, will you kiss me? Just once?”
“Sabrina, we–”
“I know,” I interrupted him. Two different worlds, I remember. One day I’ll go back to my life and you’ll be here with yours. But I’ll always wonder what it would have been like.”
He lifted his cheek from my head and reached for my chin, tipping it back. “That’s not what I was going to say.”
“It wasn’t?”
“We would never stop at just a kiss.”
I smiled. “Would that be so bad?”
“Woman, it would be fucking incredible.”

Everything changes for then during their time at the outpost, and I loved how it all unfolded. But Sabrina is still in danger, and when the time comes for her to return to Seattle, what will happen to everything that they have found together?

I was fucked.
For every minute we spent together, I wanted ten more. And the sex? Fuck me. We connected on every level that existed.
So, yeah. I. Was. Fucked.
I didn’t want her for right now. I wanted her for always.
I wanted what I’d never have.

This is such a gorgeous read. The love story is slow-burning with lots of emotion and a nice amount of sexy time. The suspense part of the story is woven through really well, providing an intriguing edge to everything else that’s happening, and there’s a profound aspect to the book as Sabrina’s stay at the outpost brings changes she wasn’t expecting. Though enforced, it’s her first opportunity to stop her fast-paced lifestyle, sit back and take stock of things. She has time to think, to figure herself out and to find peace in the solitude, and I loved how her journey was explored.

And then there’s Beau. Oh holy damn, how I love this man. Strong, dependable, honest and caring, he’s seriously sexy with just the right amount of alpha, and I completely fell for him. He always knows just what to say and what to do, he’s not afraid of some PDA, and there are some moments in this book where his mere presence made me giddy. He’s a wonderful, sigh-inducing romantic hero.

“No man would ever hold me this well.
I was made to be wrapped in these arms.
A woman could tell a lot by the way a man holds her. She could tell if he had the strength to endure the rougher moments. If he had a mighty yet kind heart. If he could make her feel safe and cherished.
Beau’s embrace said all that and more.”

I loved this book. I wasn’t sure going in if I was in the mood for this kind of read, but I was hooked once I got into it, and the ending left me with a big goofy grin, and the epilogue finishes off Sabrina and Bea’s story beautifully.

4.5 stars.

An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

<img
