I watched him stride across the caf\u00e9 toward the door, hating the way everything tightened when he did.<\/p>\n

His or mine, I wasn\u2019t sure.<\/p>\n

But it was there.<\/p>\n

Heavy.
\nPressing on my heart.<\/p>\n

I couldn\u2019t stop from watching him through the big windows as he started down the sidewalk, the man a scorching silhouette in the blaze of the day.<\/p>\n

But he didn\u2019t climb into his car that was parked at the curb.<\/p>\n

He began to pace.<\/p>\n

A pace that looked like indecision and turmoil.<\/p>\n

Back and forth right on the other side of the window.<\/p>\n

His head tilted back toward the sky, as if it might hold an answer, before he set his coffee and the lollipops down on one of the open tables, dug in his pocket, and pulled out his phone.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019re an idiot,\u201d Jenna hissed from beside me. \u201cThat guy likes you, and he\u2019s literally the hottest thing to ever walk through that door. And he bought All. The. Lollipops.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maybe that was part of the problem.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t get simple,\u201d was my response.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat if he doesn\u2019t want simple?\u201d<\/p>\n

I would have answered her, told her that in the end, everyone did. They always took the easy way out when the going got tough. Except the caf\u00e9 phone rang. I moved for it, thankful for the distraction, something to keep my feet from rounding the counter and running after him.<\/p>\n

Because what the hell would that accomplish?<\/p>\n

I lifted the receiver from the wall and pressed it to my ear. \u201cA Drop of Hope. How can I help you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGo out with me.\u201d His gravelly voice echoed through the line.<\/p>\n

A surprised sound whispered from my lips, and Kale was suddenly at the window, his face pressed to the glass, hand shading his eyes so he could see inside. His other hand was holding his cell to his ear. \u201cGo out with me, Hope. Just dinner. Because I can\u2019t fucking stop thinking about you. Couldn\u2019t after I saw you the first time at Olive\u2019s on Friday night. It only got worse after I saw you here Monday morning. I don\u2019t know what it is about you . . . but there\u2019s something that makes me want to figure it out.\u201d<\/p>\n

My breaths were hard pants, my heart a jackhammer in my chest. \u201cMy life\u2019s complicated, Kale.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I\u2019m offering you a night away from it. Don\u2019t you at least deserve that?\u201d<\/p>\n

I wanted to beg him, what then? What happened if I fell for that smirk and that smile and those tender eyes?<\/p>\n

Fast and hard?<\/p>\n

I could already feel myself slipping. My heart tipping his direction.<\/p>\n

What happened if Dane found out?<\/p>\n

What then?<\/p>\n

But I was so tired of that man controlling every aspect of my life, even after I\u2019d made the decision to cut him from it.<\/p>\n

The throb of desire that begged, a whisper in my ear that goaded\u2014just one touch.<\/p>\n

The hidden need to feel those hands skating my flesh.<\/p>\n

I guessed I\u2019d thought I\u2019d never crave that again, my life fulfilled, my spirit content in knowing I was living for what was right.<\/p>\n

Jenna squeezed tighter, my bossy best friend mouthing the word as she angled her head with the demand. \u201cSay yes.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was at the same second Kale fisted his hand against the window, his forehead rocking against it, his own words a petition. \u201cCome on, Hope. Say yes. I promise you, you won\u2019t regret it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A hint of playfulness came out on the last, but it didn\u2019t matter, because I was agreeing.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d I murmured, wanting to feel something good even though I wasn\u2019t so much a fool that I didn\u2019t know I was making a mistake. That in the end, it wouldn\u2019t hurt.
\nBecause it already felt as if this mattered.<\/p>\n
