I’m a huge fan of Immortals After Dark, and this book takes everything I love about this series and takes it up a notch, and it was so freaking good! And that’s mostly down to the awesomeness of the two lead characters. Both new to the series, Rune and Josephine are strong, funny, brave and smart with wicked senses of humour, high sex drives and they are both refreshingly blunt and honest. They do and take what they want and they make no apologies, which I love, and their chemistry is absolutely insane! I loved them both instantly, and together they are something truly special.

Josephine is a kickass heroine who has no memory of her life before the age of 8. Living on the streets and caring for her infant brother, it’s not until she’s 11 that her life shifts and she discovers that she is something ‘other’, but she’s not quite sure what that is. Reluctantly and heartbreakingly leaving her baby brother, Thaddeus, in the care of a loving family, she dedicates herself to watching over him and protecting her little section of New Orleans, defending the weak and using her vampirish/ghostish powers for good.

“Don’t know any spells. I survived probably because I’m wicked strong and all.”

Rune Darklight is a member of the newly-introduced Møriør, a mysterious and elite group of warriors. He is a dark fae (half fae/half demon), and also goes by the name Rune the Insatiable. The man is sex on legs, and he proudly and willingly uses his appeal to get the information he needs for his job as an assassin. Bedding anyone, anytime, anywhere.

I pay them well in their favorite currency: stiff fuckings with a stout cock. It just so happens I’m rich beyond measure.

Rune and Jo first meet when he is engaged in such activities in an alleyway. She is turned on beyond belief, but less than impressed at Rune’s sluttiness, and after some quick banter, she dismisses him. But Rune’s latest target is none other than our favourite Valkyrie oracle, Nix, and when he takes his shot at her, she just happens to be with Jo’s now-grown brother (the mysterious ‘Thad’ who has appeared in a number of books now…

Spoiler

he was one of the supernaturals held in The Order’s prison and was involved in the breakout and subsequently ‘adopted’ by the valkyries).

Thinking that Rune is attacking her brother, Jo jumps in to protect him, bringing her into direct contact with Rune, and when the two of them are mythically tied together for the duration of his mission, fireworks are in store.

“I like a guy with passion. When you finished back there, I couldn’t tell if you’d gotten your nut or muffled a sneeze.”

“You got a woodie; I got a wettie. Doesn’t mean mine was for yours.”

I love the openness and honesty between these two. There is an obvious attraction, they don’t hide it, there’s no game playing, they just go with it, and it’s SO freaking sexy! Sex is a significant part of life for Rune, and he has no qualms discussing anything and everything about it, and with the epic sexual tension between him and Jo, there’s a whole lot of talking, touching and foreplay, and OMG it’s sizzling!

Hers eyes were as frantic as he felt. She needed; he provided.
Emotions?
He was raw. Scalded.
With a bellow, he shoved home.

Jo has been alone her entire life and watching her embrace finally having somebody in her corner is just gorgeous. And as for Rune, Jo affects him like nobody ever has, and though he has no intention of becoming attached to anybody, he can’t help the feelings that develop, and the naturally-developing romance is absolutely beautiful! I could feel Rune and Jo falling for each other, they don’t hide the fact that they are, they just embrace it and go with it, being their crude and outspoken selves the whole time, and every moment is pure gold!

He believed dark feys didn’t get a mate, but she mentally waved that away because men often believed stupid shit.

But that’s not to say that their end games are the same, because they are far from it. They have hurdles to overcome, and there is some angst as it all plays out, but it’s well written and not at all overwhelming, and I absolutely loved their story.

Jo is one of my favourite heroines of the series, I love her! She’s confident and badass, and she’s SO freaking funny, and her bold and brash statements had me laughing and cheering, and sometimes both! And Rune is pure awesome. At over 7,000 years old, he is powerful and wise, but he’s never opened himself up to anybody, and his tragic backstory just makes him all the more appealing. They may be an unlikely match, but there’s a spark between them that you can feel, and I loved them together.

“I vow to you I’ll never be with another. I love you, Josie.”
She sucked in a breath. “I love you too. Even when you’re a dickwad.”

I loved the introduction of the Møriør. They are an intriguing bunch who are uber-powerful with a big part to play in the coming Accession. They have a fantastic dynamic and already interesting backstories, and I can’t wait to get to know them better.

This is a fantastic read, and the audiobook narration is once again stellar thanks to the genius that is Robert Petkoff, and the whole thing was a huge win for me. I absolutely loved it!

5 stars!

For full series info, see our Immortals After Dark series page.

Buy: Kindle Ebook | Paperback | Audio Review 5 epic stars!
