And with that lie, she let him go.”

The Smallest Part is a beautifully poignant friends-to-lovers story that encompasses the good, the bad, and the ugly of characters, their relationships, and the life altering decisions they make. I knew going into the story who got the guy but it didn’t make it any less devastating watching the whole thing play out. Full of angst and so many feels, this story was emotionally intense, and I loved it!

Amy Harmon is extremely talented at bringing characters to life, characters that leave a lasting imprint on my heart. Mercedes, Noah, and Cora were different in so many ways yet they shared a special bond that could not be severed. They impacted one another so profoundly that their lives were forever intertwined. Their solid friendship could weather any storm and meant the world to them. True friends, they didn’t only see the good in each other, they also accepted the bad.

Mercedes is a beautiful soul. Selfless and loyal, she would do anything for her friends, and when she loves, she does so with her whole heart. She carries so much on her shoulders and she’d do it again in a heartbeat even when it hurts. I cried for Mercedes, for her missed dreams, missed love, and missed opportunities, and she deserved to have the kind of love that is everything.

Noah is amazing as a friend, father, and lover. He loves with a fierceness that is endearing and believable. He is honest with his feelings and devoted to the people in his life. I felt his conflicting emotions and understood the struggle he was going through as he faced new challenges when everything came crashing down.

Cora was a difficult character to like in the end. As things came to light I became increasingly more frustrated with her. She and Mercedes were opposites in every way and as learn more about Cora, the differences were much more apparent. I wanted to scream at her so many times but then I remembered how broken she was, and I wanted to cry for her too.

This slow burning romance really hits you with the feels as it progresses realistically and naturally. There was tragedy and devastating loss, broken hearts and endless sadness. I felt their soul shattering pain and cried for and with them. I also felt the healing and acceptance as they began to move on and the new feelings that mixed with the old ones that were pushed aside years before. There is passion and love but a new relationship seems just out of grasp at times, especially when the characters have secrets that tear them up inside. It was painful watching them keep things hidden when they have always been honest with each other.

“Are there things you aren’t saying, Noah?” Mercedes asked, wanting to know what he knew but not wanting to reveal her own secrets.
“There are things I’m not saying, Mer,” he answered. “Things I may never say.”
“Okay,” she whispered, wondering for the umpteenth time what was right and what was wrong, what was betrayal and what was love. But if Noah was set on silence, she would be silent too.

These amazing characters are everything to each other and they remain strong while taking on new roles after all they experience. Learning to navigate life when everything came crashing down was difficult and I felt the resistance and hesitancy to change the relationship Noah and Mercedes had maintained over the past twenty years. I felt the love they possessed and desperately wanted to see them get their HEA especially after everything was revealed.

Things aren’t always as they seem and there are jaw-dropping twists that left me stunned. The truth took shape as the web of secrets began to unravel and I’ll be honest, I did not see what was coming. I was emotionally drained and fulfilled at the same time while reading this novel and in the end, even with all the pain and heartbreak experienced, it was all worth it.

“Sometimes it’s the smallest part that steals the show.”

I have to mention that Amy Harmon has a wonderful way of interconnecting her characters that makes everything come together. I love how she incorporated previous characters from her other books into this one. Seeing Moses Wright again put an instant smile on my face and I loved that we got to relive the intense scene with David Taggert from The Law of Moses through Noah’s eyes. I always wondered what he thought of Moses’ revelation and I loved how much of an impact Moses’ had on him.

*ARC generously provided by the author*

About the Author

Amy Harmon is a Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and New York Times Bestselling author.
