\u201cOh?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She crossed her arms and leaned back against the counter, giving me the evil eye. \u201cYes. He doesn\u2019t have to be hard as granite all the way through, <\/span>all<\/span><\/i> the time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t think about being hard. Don\u2019t think about being hard. Don\u2019t think about being hard. <\/span><\/i>I leaned back against the opposite counter and sort of held my glass in front of my crotch. \u201cWhy are you even concerned with alpha males? You\u2019re never attracted to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat? Yes, I am!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo, you\u2019re not.\u201d I knew her type well. \u201cYou\u2019re always saying how you don\u2019t want to be rescued, you want someone willing to show affection and talk about feelings, you don\u2019t like arrogant or competitive guys or guys who always have to win, you like guys who get along with everyone\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s wrong with that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNothing. But that\u2019s not an alpha male.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She chewed her bottom lip. \u201cBut look at Bond. Who is he so worried about protecting? Why is he so driven to kill the bad guys? There must be people he cares about more than himself to put himself in harm\u2019s way so often.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe he just likes the thrill of the chase.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe he\u2019s more selfless than you think.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn this case, I think we\u2019re going to have to disagree.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She sighed heavily, and I knew I had disappointed her by ending the argument in a draw instead of winning or losing it. Any other night, I might have kept it going, but there was something odd going on with me, something that had me wanting to close the distance between us, set her up on the counter, slip my hands beneath that fuzzy white sweater she had on, see what her legs felt like wrapped around my hips. But I knew better.<\/span><\/p>\n

Get her out of here before you do something stupid.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cHey, you got fortune cookies? I didn\u2019t see those.\u201d She reached for the little cellophane bag.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI forgot about them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCan I have one?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYou can have them both.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She took one out and cracked it open. \u201cA ship in harbor is safe, but that\u2019s not why ships are built.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cVery deep.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She ignored me and went on to the next one. \u201cYou have to keep breaking your heart until it opens.\u201d Her lips pursed. \u201cHm. I don\u2019t want a dangerous ship <\/span>or<\/span><\/i> a broken heart.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I laughed at the anguish in her tone and expression.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not funny,\u201d she said, shoving pieces of cookie in her mouth. \u201cIt means I\u2019m doomed to be unhappy. And then I\u2019m going to die in a shipwreck.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt means you take things way too seriously.\u201d I tipped back the last of the bourbon in my glass, and set it in the sink. \u201cWell, I\u2019ve got an early morning at the gym tomorrow.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She popped the rest of one cookie in her mouth and brushed off her hands. \u201cI\u2019m going. What time is it anyway?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I checked the digital clock on the microwave. \u201cIt\u2019s 11:11.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her face lit up. \u201cOoh! Make a wish!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s 11:11, you have to make a wish.\u201d She closed her eyes for a couple seconds, her lips moving as if saying a silent prayer. Then she opened them. \u201cDid you do it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I laughed. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNate! Hurry up! Make a wish.\u201d She glanced at the clock and flapped her hands agitatedly.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have a wish to make.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo make one for me, then. And do it fast, before it\u2019s 11:12.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This time it was my turn to roll my eyes, but secretly I wished that the next guy she fell in love with would love her back the way she deserved, and she\u2019d be happy. But I didn\u2019t close my eyes, and I didn\u2019t move my lips, so she had no idea whether I\u2019d made a wish or not.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cDid you do it?\u201d She looked concerned.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Her mouth fell open for a second. \u201cWhat was it? What did you wish for me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I started to laugh as I left the kitchen. \u201cNice try, Calamity. Even I know you don\u2019t tell a wish if you want it to come true.\u201d The credits were still rolling on the television, and I picked up the remote to turn everything off.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOh, <\/span>now<\/span><\/i> you believe in wishes?\u201d She sat down on the couch and tugged on her fluffy boots.<\/span><\/p>\n

No<\/span><\/i>, I wanted to tell her. <\/span>I don\u2019t, because I learned a long time ago that wishes and prayers and hopes don\u2019t mean anything. No one is listening.<\/span><\/i> But I didn\u2019t tell her that, not only because she was looking up at me with my favorite expression of hers, the one daring me to fight back, but because at that very moment, I heard a noise in the hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

A strange and oddly terrifying noise.<\/span><\/p>\n

I looked over my shoulder toward the door, thinking I must have imagined the sound.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I heard it again\u2014the unmistakable, ball-shrinking, cringe-inducing sound of a baby\u2019s wail.<\/span><\/p>\n
