I don’t think anyone believes that happily ever after means there are no unhappy days, even unhappy years. It means loving forever, despite all the many reasons it’s easier not to.”

3 “love you forever” stars

I’m not entirely sure how to start this review and am really torn about how I am feeling after reading Midnight Lily. It is a very different story than we usually get from Mia Sheridan. It still has Mia’s beautiful writing, unexpected twists and gorgeous romances, but it fell short for me in many ways. I am not even sure are how to write this review without giving away the plot and twists, so it going to be pretty vague. I do think it is best to go in blind because the twists, especially the first, are jaw-dropping.

I adored the first half of the book. I felt the connection between the characters and loved the mystery. Mia wrote a beautiful beginning of a love story that made me smile and swoon. Both characters are flawed but are so similar that they are drawn to each other.

It seemed . . . meant to be, like fate. Beautifully designed. That we had, against all odds, somehow found each other out here in the middle of nowhere. Two people who needed each other so desperately.

Then the first twist is revealed and BAM! I did not see that coming! I had theories, all which I was wrong about, and I was so excited to have been surprised the way I was! Then the whole story changes and from there I think my rating started to fall. The more twists that were revealed, the more confused I got. I think maybe the story was too complex.

The love between the characters is what kept my rating from falling below three stars. It was so sweet and all-consuming, and I felt their connection. Their love was strong and they were committed to making it work.

“We will never be perfect or without flaws, the lives we’ve been given are not like that. But, Lily, in my heart, you are perfect for me. Perfectly mine. And I’m yours.”

“I’m not afraid of the darkness. I’ve been there before. I’ll step into it willingly, unhesitatingly, and I’ll come find you. No one else could make that promise and mean it, Lily. No one. No one except me.”

But by the end, I am left feeling….I don’t know…confused? unsatisfied? underwhelmed? overwhelmed? I am actually not sure how I feel. I need more…I need answers. My confusion isn’t about their love, it’s about everything else.

Spoiler

What is real?
