This book plunges us straight back into the dark and violent gang world that Grim and Emma Jean inhabit, and all of that intensity is present once again as the story winds and twists its way closer to the war that is building.<\/p>\n If you don\u2019t remember details from the last book, I would recommend refreshing yourself, as the action starts pretty much straight away without a lot of rehashing and you may find yourself a bit lost. Whether you did a quick reread, or if you remember it all, you\u2019ll be so ready for the intensity of this story to continue, and OMG, did it ever!<\/p>\n Grim and Emma Jean\u2019s star-crossed love story took a dramatic turn in the final pages of Perversion<\/i>, and though everything is finally out in the open between them, events in the real world have conspired once again to tear them apart. Emma Jean is in hell, but she is surviving, leading Grim to embrace his new role within the Bedlam and fight for his girl, and oh holy damn, it\u2019s awesome.<\/p>\n \u201cThe broken don\u2019t need to be put back together, they need to be loved for all their pieces.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n It\u2019s action, violence, death and betrayal, and it\u2019s just the beginning of what is to come as lines are drawn and crossed, and true evil is revealed.\u00a0 Trigger warning – \u201cIf we can\u2019t stop it, we might as well toast to it \u2026 To war. To peace. To prosperity. To death. To life.\u201d<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n And in the middle of it all, we get to see the passionate intensity that is Grim and his Tricks together. The connection between these two is palpable, and though they exist in a dangerous world, what they find together is so, so beautiful, and their moments together are sexy, romantic and intense, and bring some tenderness and a bright light in all of the darkness.<\/p>\n This isn\u2019t just lust. It\u2019s more than that. Desire amplified by a thousand along with some other shit I\u2019m not familiar with but am assaulted by with every thought. Every touch. She\u2019s everywhere. The characters from the last series are all present, and I love the loyalty and dynamics within the brotherhood, and there are some new ones introduced, all adding depth to the world and bringing a lot to the story. And cameos from the King<\/i> series bring extra badassery and some very welcome laughs.<\/p>\n There\u2019s a lot happening in such a short book, and it\u2019s very fast-paced, making it a really intense read, and I couldn\u2019t put it down. She points with her eyes to the item in my hand, then leaves. <\/span><\/p>\n The object I\u2019m holding is a rock with a piece of paper attached to it by a rubber band. I pull the paper free and flip it over. It\u2019s a note.<\/span><\/p>\n Stay by the glass, motherfucker! Whatever you do, don\u2019t turn around. PS-You look nice today. Prison blue suits you.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n The one-piece scratchy uniform I\u2019m wearing is bright orange.\u00a0 What the fuck is all this about?<\/span><\/p>\n I peer out from my cell. There\u2019s no one in the room now. Not even the janitor. The security camera high in the corner across from my cell, the one that\u2019s usually pointed directly at me, is now facing down toward the floor.<\/span><\/p>\n Whatever you do, don\u2019t turn around. <\/span><\/i>Okay, so I won\u2019t turn around completely, but curiosity leads me to risk a glance over my shoulder. It\u2019s just a wall. An empty blank wall. BOOM. BOOOOOM!<\/span><\/p>\n An empty blank wall…that just exploded.<\/span><\/p>\n The sound resonates through my eardrums. I duck and cover my head with my hands as pieces of cement rain down into the cell. Dust coats my hair and the back of my neck. After a few beats, I stand, waving away the plumes of the aftermath.<\/span><\/p>\n Through the debris, I can just barely make out headlights. It\u2019s a truck with a battering bar attached to the hood.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAll aboard! This train is leaving the motherfucking station.\u00a0 Literally!\u201d shouts a voice. I can\u2019t see who it is through the windshield which is shrouded in what remains of my cell. I don\u2019t have time to ask any questions of the mystery voice.<\/span><\/p>\n There\u2019s no time to question anything.<\/span><\/p>\n The passenger door flies open. Two officers appear behind me.\u00a0 One fumbles with the cell keys while the other shouts at him to move faster.<\/span><\/p>\n It won\u2019t be fast enough.<\/span><\/p>\n I leap into the truck and slam the door. The tires spin in place for a few seconds until they finally grip the concrete. My head hits the headliner as we reverse over the broken bricks until we\u2019re clear of them and are able to make forward motion. It isn\u2019t until we\u2019re through the field and on the road when I finally get a good look of my getaway driver. <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cPreppy?\u201d I ask. \u201cWhat the fuck are you doing here?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Preppy may not be part of any official organization, but he runs a tight ship over in Logan\u2019s Beach. Belly and I have worked with him and his friend King a few times in the past. I haven\u2019t seen Preppy since before he was thought to be dead only to later be rescued from an underground cave where he was held captive for the better part of a year.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cGrim? Fuck, I thought I was rescuing Bear. Get the fuck out,\u201d he teases. \u201cJust kidding. If Bear was locked up I wouldn\u2019t help him escape. That fucker could use some \u2018me time\u2019 to contemplate his grumpy nature.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He holds the wheel with one hand and straightens his signature bowtie with the other. His white dress shirt is rolled up to his elbows revealing arms heavily covered with both tattoos and angry jagged scars.<\/span><\/p>\n He lights a joint and tugs on the wheel, making a sharp turn off the road into a dark heavily wooded area. When we\u2019ve made it in far enough to be fully camouflaged by trees and brush, Preppy kills the engine.<\/span><\/p>\n He passes me the joint, and I take a much-needed hit, holding the smoke for as long as I can before slowly exhaling.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThanks, man. How the fuck did you get sucked into this?\u201d \u201cIsn\u2019t your kid like ten now?\u201d I ask. \u201cWhat kind of trouble can a ten-year-old get into that needs Bethany\u2019s kind of help?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s eight,\u201d Preppy corrects. \u201cAnd my boy catches the kind of trouble most kids his age don\u2019t know is out there to catch. My girls are easier. Twin toddlers. Miley and Taylor. The three of them, along with their mama, are the loves of my fucked-up life.<\/span><\/p>\n Bo\u2019s a good kid. He\u2019s just\u2026well, his brain arrow doesn\u2019t exactly shoot straight. Its target is usually more\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Preppy shapes his hand like an arrow aimed at the windshield, then changes the aim to me.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHuman.\u201d He drops his hand. \u201cAnd the incident in question wasn\u2019t <\/span>that<\/span><\/i> bad. It may or may not have had something to do with the unfortunate disappearance of a certain\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He waves the rest of his sentence away like there\u2019s a gnat flying around his head.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cLet\u2019s just say he\u2019s grounded. VERY grounded. For life. Or like a week. Minimum a few days. Or a day. Maybe, an hour or two. Poor kid. Maybe, I\u2019ll just take him to the movies.\u201d He sighs. \u201cYou\u2019ll see. Wait until you\u2019ve got some sex trophies of your own. You\u2019ll understand.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Kids. I\u2019ve never thought of myself with a kid before. I picture Tricks holding a baby in her arms. Our baby. Much to my surprise, I don\u2019t fucking hate it. Although, the thought isn\u2019t helpful to my current situation and only makes me more impatient and enraged.<\/span><\/p>\n One thing at a fucking time.<\/span><\/p>\n Sirens wail through the night. Preppy remains cool and calm like he\u2019s driving a parade float down main street, and not at all like he\u2019s running from the law with a fugitive.<\/span><\/p>\n Blue and red flashes light up the woods. After a few seconds, the vehicles pass, and both the lights and sirens fade off into the distance. \u201cThat\u2019s our bat signal. Let\u2019s get you the fuck outta here so I can get home to the missus and eat her cookies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n Preppy pauses, probably realizing his odd choice of words. \u201cI do actually mean cookies. Dre makes a mean batch of chocolate chip.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n I stare silently out at the passing trees.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m going to eat her pussy, too. You know, after the other kind of cookies. Just so we\u2019re clear.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThanks, man. We\u2019re clear. And if you ever need anything and I\u2019m not dead or serving time, I\u2019m there,\u201d I assure him. I mean it. I owe him a debt. A huge one.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHhhhmmm,\u201d he considers, taking the joint I pass him. \u201cHow do you feel about babysitting?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n I smile at his joke until I look over at Preppy only to see he\u2019s not doing the same.\u00a0 <\/span>In fact, it\u2019s the only time in my life I\u2019d ever seen him with a straight face.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI uh\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n He looks straight ahead through the scratched and broken windshield. Bits of concrete from our escape attempt cover the dashboard, and some of it is lodged into the glass. \u201cNever mind. You can do me one favor, though.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cAnything within my power. It\u2019s yours.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cDon\u2019t tell King about this,\u201d he says. It comes out as a sheepish high-pitched question.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cWhy? He wouldn\u2019t want to know that you broke me out?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n King was a friend of Belly\u2019s and a good ally to Bedlam. It wouldn\u2019t make sense that he\u2019d be against helping me. I\u2019d do the same for any of them if the roles were reversed. <\/span><\/p>\n Preppy shakes his head. \u201cOh no, he knows I broke you out. I just sent him a text to tell him it\u2019s over. The grand escape is complete.\u201d He steps on the gas. <\/span>\u201cBut he don\u2019t gotta know I used his truck to do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n T.M.
