He\u2019s hot as blazes, and a real smooth-talker. I like everything about him, from his rich, bronze-toned skin to his hypnotic brown eyes.<\/p>\n
He can talk me through it. I\u2019m a quick study.<\/p>\n
And I\u2019m not a virgin. There have been boyfriends\u2014four of them. But not one of them ever managed to\u2026 There\u2019s no polite way to say it. Nice Southern girls aren\u2019t supposed to speak in detail about sex. But let\u2019s just say I\u2019ve never been very satisfied by my sexual experiences so far.<\/p>\n
So this is not an opportunity to be squandered. In fact, it\u2019s time to up the ante. Just because I don\u2019t have a whole lot of experience seducing men doesn\u2019t mean I\u2019m clueless about life in general.<\/p>\n
Slowly, I ease my body a little closer to his. Two inches, maybe. Then I smile at him.<\/p>\n
And\u2014holy heck\u2014the results are instantaneous. His eyes sweep down my body. And it\u2019s almost as if he touched me with his hands, too. I feel that gaze burning me up everywhere it lands. Then he looks up again and gives me a hot smile. We\u2019re having an entire conversation without words.<\/p>\n
This is a revelation. I feel bold and a little wild.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo what happens next, Hot Pepper?\u201d he asks.<\/p>\n
Oh my. That thumping sound is my heart taking off like a jackrabbit running a fifty-yard dash. I thought I had some more time to get used to the idea before we actually made our move.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you gonna stay in Brooklyn and finish your internship, even if it causes family strife?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh,\u201d I say slowly, because, whoops! I\u2019m the one who\u2019s gotten ahead. \u201cI\u2019ll stick with the internship. Heck, yes. I have no marketable skills.\u201d My internship doesn\u2019t pay very much. But I can live in Daddy\u2019s Manhattan apartment and ride the subway to work.<\/p>\n
\u201cGood for you,\u201d Jason says.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s an easy decision,\u201d I agree. \u201cI need to start living differently, or I\u2019m in danger of spending the rest of my life trying to please other people.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s no good,\u201d he agrees. We\u2019re still standing way too close together, and we\u2019re still flirting. But I can tell he\u2019s actually listening.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was deeply unhappy at school last year. And my parents didn\u2019t care. You know what\u2019s funny?\u201d I can hear myself talking too much, but his attentiveness encourages me. \u201cWhen I was a teenager I actually took classes on how to please people. It\u2019s called charm school.\u201d<\/p>\n
His deep laugh vibrates through my belly. \u201cTo learn to be charming? I can already tell you got an A-plus.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s natural ability,\u201d I tease. \u201cBut they taught us etiquette\u2014which fork to use first and how to set a table for six courses. How to daintily remove an olive pit from your mouth. How to introduce two people when there\u2019s an imbalance of power.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow do you do that?\u201d he asks, leaning in just a few millimeters closer.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re supposed to address the person of higher rank first. \u2018Mr. Important Person, I would like to introduce Mr. Lesser-person.\u2019 And then you offer any further details that are appropriate to the situation.\u201d I can smell his aftershave. It\u2019s clean and spicy. I have the strangest urge to lean in and kiss his angular jaw.<\/p>\n
\u201cWho knew?\u201d He moves imperceptibly closer. \u201cAnd now I\u2019m wondering how many times I\u2019ve been put in my place like that without realizing it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOh, please,\u201d I tease him. \u201cTry being the office intern for a day. I might as well wear a nametag that says, Hello My Name Is Lesser Person.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat else did they teach you at charm school?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cHow to foxtrot. The proper way to phrase a wedding invitation. Penmanship. How to dance with a boy you don\u2019t like in order to save his feelings. In other words, how to be a good girl even when you don\u2019t want to be.\u201d The more I think about it, the more it sounds like brainwashing.<\/p>\n
\u201cHmm,\u201d Jason whispers. We\u2019re so close together now that the word vibrates against my cheek. And then he leans in and lets his lips coast past my temple. It\u2019s so faint that it can\u2019t even be called a kiss. But it makes me shiver just the same.<\/p>\n
No wonder this man gets any woman he wants. I\u2019m practically quivering for him, and he hasn\u2019t even kissed me.<\/p>\n
Then his voice drops low, and he asks, \u201cWould you rather be a bad girl, Heidi?\u201d<\/p>\n
Holy heck in a handbag! It\u2019s the cheesiest line ever, but my girl parts shimmy all the same.<\/p>\n
And then he puts his mouth right beside my ear. \u201cAre you\u2014\u201d He drops his voice to barely a whisper. \u201c\u2014thinking of wearing white after Labor Day?\u201d<\/p>\n
