Ever.”

4 beautifully heartwrenching forbidden stars

From the moment I read the blurb of this book, I have been so intrigued! I don’t mind a bit of a taboo romance, and in this case it’s a situation that is all too believable, and that can (and has) easily happen in real life. It’s a heartbreaking situation, and I was so keen to see how it was all going to play out.

Sage is a young college student who is shy, quiet and suffocating under the controlling thumb of her socialite mother. Her creativity and artistic soul is constantly stifled by being forced into social situations with snobby bitches who judge and make snide comments. She longs to be free to be who she truly is.

Mars’ life is the complete opposite of Sage’s, yet he struggles with similar issues. Born into near-poverty, blamed for his mother’s drug addiction and eventual death, and physically and emotionally abused by his alcoholic father, Mars is doing the best he can to drag himself out of a horrible situation and make something of his life.

When Sage and Mars meet, they have an instant connection. They see each other for who they really are, and for the first time they feel acknowledged and accepted, and they cling to that feeling with everything that they have.

She sees the real man behind the façade of smiles and jokes and my big mouth.
Heartache, loneliness, and guilt look back at her.
She doesn’t shy away though.
No, Sage with the glittering gray-green eyes steps closer. Her cheeks are pink and her ears are red. Embarrassed and shy, but determined. That small glint in her stare, coupled with the way she lifts her chin slightly, pulls me the rest of the way from my dark, clouded mood and tethers me to her light.
I caught a shooting star.
… She’s soaring through the darkness and I’ve grabbed hold. I don’t want to let go.

They fall for each other hard and fast, embracing their feelings and everything that is happening between them. It’s beautiful, natural and so easy, they know they have met their soul mate and are planning a future together where they will leave the misery of their lives behind and be together forever. But their dreams come crashing down when a secret from the past reveals that they share a parent, and are half-siblings.

She’s my sister.
Not my lover. Not my girlfriend. Not my motherfucking soul mate.
My goddam sister.
Same fucking blood.
…
I thought I had my happiness within my grasp. It felt too good to be true and I knew it, yet I chased after it anyway.
I was gonna love her forever.

It’s devastating. My heart broke for the two of them. So happy, so in love, their relationship the only bright spark in both of their lives, only for them to be torn apart by a shocking betrayal.

My heart is ash in my chest.
The only person I’ve ever loved is being pried from my grasp, and I can’t seem to stop it from happening.

The emotion is beautifully written as they try desperately to make sense of all that is happening and all that they are feeling. Grieving and suffering, they cling to their connection to pull them from their heartache.

Even though it hurts like hell to work through the wreckage caused by our parents, we’re the only people we can talk to about it. We’re the only ones who understand without judgement.
So we keep talking because it’s all we can do.

Her heart is broken, like mine. Her soul is shattered, like mine. Her existence is empty, like mine.
… “I can’t do this without you,” she murmurs.

This story does raise a lot of questions and it certainly makes you think. I knew what the book was about going into it, and I tried my hardest not to judge and just to lose myself in the story, and I was able to see their perspectives and sympathise with all that they go through.

We don’t even feel like siblings. We didn’t grow up together or even know about each other. The way we found one another feels like something cosmic and destined. Nothing about it feels wrong.

Is it right or wrong? I’m not here to judge, but I could certainly appreciate the depth of their connection and their love for each other and I was captivated as they worked through their impossible situation, fighting to hold on to the only happiness they have ever known.

Mine. Mine. Mine.
Fuck, she’s mine.
Sanity is a thing of the past.
Insanity is my newest love.
Logic and reason are for haters, not lovers.
Lovers take the plunge into madness together, hand in hand.

I really enjoyed this book. I truly cared about Sage and Mars, I felt their connection, I loved how honestly they gave of themselves, and I reveled in the feels – both good and bad. I love that the story is written in dual POV, getting us right into their lives and their feelings, allowing us to understand the complexity of their emotions that were explored in such detail.

This is the first time I’ve read either of these authors, and I found that I connected more with Mars’ POV than Sage’s – his heartache and his feelings definitely affected me more strongly – but as a writing duo, they blend really well to create a cohesive story.

Spoilery thoughts…

Spoiler

The connection between these characters is undeniable. Could they have maintained their connection without making things sexual? Possibly. I felt like their bond would have been there even if they chose to keep things platonic and have a true sibling relationship. But they didn’t want that. Their chemistry is strong and they felt that attraction to each other and they chose to act on it and embrace all that they felt for each other, knowing that they were it for each other. Whether you agree with it or not, I loved watching that progression between them as they figured it all out.

I was surprised at how accepting Sage’s father (step-father) was of the situation though. It was clear that he had Sage’s back unquestionably throughout the book, which I loved, but the way he instantly and actively encouraged her to follow her heart and grab her happiness came as a bit of a shock. Also a shock is why the hell he remained married to Sage’s mother! She’s a callous bitch and he doesn’t seem to care for her. I would have loved it if she ended up alone.

I also like the way they address the issue of children. Again, I’m not making a call about right or wrong or bringing personal beliefs into it, but I thought it was well handled and I’m glad that the authors chose to show us that part of their story.

This book won’t be for everybody, but if you’re able to look past the black and white and appreciate the grey, it’s a beautifully told story that will definitely invoke the feels.

4 stars.

An Advanced Reader Copy was generously provided by the authors in exchange for an honest review.

<img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="41225" data-permalink="https://www.escapistbookblog.com/?attachment_id=41225" data-orig-file="https://i0.wp.com/www.escapistbookblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/Like-Dragonflies-Teaser-1.jpg?fit=800%2C533&ssl=1" data-orig-size="800,533" data-comments-opened="1" data-image-meta="{"aperture":"0","credit":"mikhail_kayl -
