There is a lot of love out there for this book, and the series as a whole, and while it started off strong for me, sadly I just didn’t feel this one.

This book is not a standalone, and it dives right back into the story just a short time after the ending of the last one, with Liam and Samantha on the run as he works to hunt down the bad guys and figure out a motive for all of the craziness surrounding them, all while protecting the girl he loves.

The soldier in me understands collateral damages. It understands statistics. The man wants to hold Samantha close. I’ll burn down the world before I let it singe her.

It should have been exciting. It should have been romantic. I was all geared up for something, but unfortunately it just didn’t happen for me.

After setting the stage for an exciting, sexy and intense forbidden-ish romance in the first book of the series, the second book slowed the pace down a little bit with a lot of push and pull between our tormented lovers and for me this book just felt more of the same. Liam is revelling in guilt for having feelings for his ward and his ‘failure’ in protecting her, while also dealing with the baggage from his traumatic childhood. Samantha still wants him regardless and takes every opportunity to try and convince him of that.

“I’m tired of being your punishment, Liam North. Make me something else. Show me what it would be like if you took what you wanted, no guilt, not regrets.”

For pretty much the entire book… again.

And hanging in the background of all of the romantic drama, the whole book has this feeling of something is going to happen. Liam is setting the stage for a big showdown (mooning about Samantha the whole time), but when it goes down, it’s at the very end of the book with very little fanfare or excitement. I read it and was just like…. ‘huh’. Throw in some totally out-of-left-field reveals about Samantha’s past and her father’s activities, and the whole thing left me with even more questions than I started with.

Even the happy ever after seemed to come out of nowhere. Like flicking a switch, suddenly everything is fine and happy, Samantha and Liam are both over their issues and planning a happy future together.

“I’m going to make a million mistakes, but I’ll do it with love. With adoration. With gratitude, if you’ll let me try.”

Again… ‘huh’. So sadly, the love story fell really flat for me. There is love there, but their dynamic is a complicated one, the sex feels more like ownership and punishment and I just didn’t feel the romance at all, which was disappointing.

There are new characters introduced – not sure whether they have a book or they’re going to be getting one? And there’s a bit of a lead in to a story for Liam’s younger brother (with a couple of chapters from his POV), but again those just felt like unnecessary filler that didn’t progress the story at all.

After reading Overture, I had high hopes for this series, but it ended up feeling very ‘meh’. Warren has a strong writing style, which I appreciated, but the story just didn’t work for me.

2 stars – it was ok.

An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

North Security

<img
