A paranormal rom/com that is lots of fun with great characters, a gorgeous romance and an engaging story. And will you look at that cover? I admit, it was the cover art that drew me to this book, and I’m so glad I read it because I really enjoyed this one.

24-year-old Ginny is a mortician. It’s an unusual job, but it’s her family’s legacy, she takes pride in caring for the recently deceased and their families, and it suits her introverted nature. But her job – and her life – take a surprising twist when one of the bodies she is working on wakes up on the table, and she shockingly is introduced to the world of the supernatural by Jonas, a 100 year old vampire.

Ginny takes the news surprisingly well, probably helped along by the fact that Jonas is drop dead gorgeous and makes her tingly all over. Jonas also seems to be feeling the attraction, but refuses to go there, insistent on staying away and keeping Ginny safe, determined to wipe her memory of their encounter. But Ginny has had some strange and terrifying moments lately, and Jonas wants to know more, which means they need to spend more time together. Winning!

It’s a fun set up, and in a great mix of comedy, excitement, sexual tension and spine-tingling anticipation, Ginny is introduced to Jonas’ world, his history, and his roommates – hilarious and broody. All the while falling harder and harder for the gorgeous vamp, who seems to be having a hard time keeping his distance.

“If someone put a single scratch on your skin, I would go utterly mad, Ginny, and yet I burn to sink my teeth into your neck every second of the day. I don’t know how to uncomplicate that for you.”

It’s a fast moving story, but the romance has the feeling of a slow burn, and I loved watching it all develop. Though it does take a while for things to progress romantically between them, there is this sense of longing – you know it’s coming, you know they both want it, it’s just that their situation is difficult, and Ginny shines as the girl who is determined to get what (and who) she wants.

“You don’t have to fight the battle alone … You don’t have to be alone at all. Give us a chance. I’m acknowledging the risk. I’m taking it.”

And Jonas proves to be the romantic hero that is hinted at from the very beginning of the book. Strong ,stubborn, protective and possessive, yet beautifully swoony and seriously sexy.

“Ginny,” Jonas said thickly. “I’m lost.”
“No. you’re found. Stay with me.”

“As soon as I get a handle on myself where you’re concerned, Ginny,” he groaned into her neck. “I am going to fuck you endlessly.”

As with most paranormal books, there’s a supernaturalness to their connection, which allows things to get really intense really fast, and I was more than happy to go along for the ride. But it’s not easy. There are external influences that bring danger and intrigue, and the past and the present crash together, bringing intensity, excitement, and a feeling of destiny as our two lovers fight for each other and for their future together.

“My sanity, my soul, my existence, depend on you being mine.” He groaned a first to his chest, right above his heart. “This cannot be governed by rules. I was a fool to think it ever could.”

I really enjoyed this book. It’s fun, sweet and sexy with an strong paranormal element and a beautifully emotional love story. It turns out this book is the first in a new series, which stories to come for Jonas’ roommates, and I’m really looking forward to continuing on.

4 stars.

An Advanced
