A deeply emotional story that is tragically heartbreaking and beautifully romantic, this book sucked me in and didn’t let me go, and I felt everything!

This is the third book in the Fury series, and is the story of NHL star, Malakai “Kai” Petrov. Kai is the goalie for the Chicago Fury, and though he has formed close friendships with a small group of his teammates, he is a lonely, mysterious and solitary man, and that’s exactly how he likes it. This book begins by showing us a glimpse of Kai’s past, and oh, holy hell it’s dark! Tragic and brutal in the most devastating of ways, it gives us so much insight into him as a character, and frankly, I’m surprised the man is a sane and functioning member of society after living through all of that! He is a man who feels deep pain, and understandably so, but he has his outlet in his art. Sure, he enjoys hockey, but it’s a way for him to make money so that he can do what his heart truly desires, which is to pour out his feelings into his various projects.

Charlotte is a gifted and dedicated violin player who is dealing with her own pain and family drama, but she finds peace and comfort in her music. Her twin brother is suffering right along with her, but he’s struggling to cope with the enormity of his feelings, instead turning to drugs to help ease his pain, so she agrees to temporarily move in with him to help keep him on track. Her brother, Emerson is a hockey player, and his roommate is none other than Kai.

Charlotte and Kai have already met – neither of them knowing too much about the other or aware of their connection through Charlotte’s brother, but sharing significant moments together nonetheless. There is a clear attraction between the two of them, and now that they’re under the same roof, Charlotte is determined to push Kai’s buttons to get him out of his shell and start something between them, even though he’s made it clear that he has no intention of going there.

Malakai was always calculated, always organized, and I wanted to make a mess of him. Muddy him up until he was so lost in me, he’d never find his way out.

It’s a great set-up as these two opposites clash so gloriously. Quirky and slightly chaotic Charlotte comes barrelling into Kai’s controlled and serious world, and completely turns him upside down. He’s never felt anything like what he feels for her, and he has no idea what to do with it. It’s both sad and wildly entertaining, and I loved how Charlotte would taunt and flirt with Kai, holding nothing back and pushing him way outside of his comfort zone.

I’d made him break that control. I had pushed him too far, and watching him unravel was something beautiful.
In a tragic way.

Kai’s past has left its mark on him and impacts the way he sees women and the things he does with them. Nothing disturbing, but he does have his kinks and preferences, but Charlotte is like nobody he has ever known, and she affects him like nobody before her. His feelings for her grow day by day, and he soon becomes lost to the intensity of it all.

Religion wasn’t my thing, but if Charlotte was a religion, I’d worship at her temple every night. I’d pledge my sins to her altar, beg her forgiveness in confession because holding her felt like I had faith in something.

It’s not a straight-forward relationship. There is chemistry and emotion, but it’s a slow-developing thing as they both wrestle with their own demons. There is a lot they need to overcome, and I felt this fantastic sense of anticipation the whole time I was reading just waiting to see how it would all work out for them. It’s raw, messy and passionate, and the emotion is powerful as they open up and allow it to consume them.

“I could burn this place to the ground with what I feel for you.”

And in the midst of all of the intensity, there are these perfect, sweet moments that are beautifully tender and so freaking swoony, and I loved watching them find something special together.

She made me feel safe. Unstained.

But the demons they are wrestling with are strong, and they still have issues to overcome, and it is not an easy ride for them. I ached with these characters and all that they are going through. It’s all so freaking unfair, and knowing how incredible they could be together, I couldn’t wait for them to find their way through it all. And it’s so worth the wait, because when it comes, it’s beautiful and heartfelt, and I had tears in my eyes watching it all play out.

“I’m not capable of loving you the way you deserve, but I have the nerve to love you anyway.”

The rest of the Fury crew are a part of the story, and I loved seeing them all. They are a great bunch of characters, and their playful dynamic made me laugh. But it was the way they embraced Kai and took his back that really got to me, and there are some gorgeous moments between them all.

“Whatever happens, this family has you. Your family always has you, just like you had us.”

There’s a really intriguing side story for Charlotte’s brother, Emerson, who will be the hero of the next book. Knowing what we know already, it’s bound to be another emotional read full of feels, and I am here for it!

I’m loving this series! Monty Jay writes so beautifully – emotional and raw with a unique edge – and I can’t wait for more.

4.5 stars.

An Advanced Review Copy was generously provided by
