And still, we haven\u2019t spoken a word.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He joins me, claiming the spot next to me while I sip my coffee, the warm, sweet liquid sliding down my throat and helping me come down about two notches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ready now, for more than my own mental ping-ponging of thoughts, I grab my phone, thumbing through photos until I find the image of the jar of blood. I set it in front of Kane.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat was left for me in the refrigerator of the crime scene.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He glances at it and then me, arching his dark brow. \u201cThe victim\u2019s blood?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPig\u2019s blood,\u201d I say matter-of-factly. \u201cThat\u2019s not confirmed, but it\u2019s going to be pig\u2019s blood. I know it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He doesn\u2019t freak out but then I don\u2019t expect anything but calm, thoughtful contemplation from Kane. He doesn\u2019t even ask why I make that assessment. He simply asks, \u201cIs this Pocher or a Roger prot\u00e9g\u00e9?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just that easily he\u2019s already in my headspace. And the question spoken at just the right time grounds me in logic rather than the emotion that had me storming out of Emma\u2019s kitchen ready to kill Pocher.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLogically,\u201d I say, \u201cthe dress and the jar could point to either. Of course, my first reaction was Pocher. We just found out he came back. And when I saw that dead woman and then saw the jar of blood, I was ready to kill him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAndrew influenced that. He already believed it was Pocher when he called you to the scene.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTrue. And it could be Pocher.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut your gut isn\u2019t reading it that way. I can tell.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I sip my coffee and add, \u201cWith the dress, and without the jar of blood, this would have read like a classic jealousy crime. The groom was already neglecting the bride and she had a side dude. And yet, it wasn\u2019t a crime of rage. We\u2019re not even sure how the woman died.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMeaning what?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe seemed to have a rupture from her throat, but there was no obvious cut.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPoison?\u201d he asks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe new medical examiner doesn\u2019t think so.\u201d My cellphone rings with Lucas\u2019s number where it still lays between me and Kane. His jaw clenches.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI called him to hack for me, and he\u2019s coming to dinner. And before you scowl, he was going to be alone, Kane.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He downs his coffee, every last drop, and stands up, his spine stiff. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fuck.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> I answer the call on speaker. It\u2019s better that way, with Kane\u2019s ear where my ears are right now. \u201cLucas,\u201d I say, and I don\u2019t warn him that Kane is in the room. If he\u2019s not smart enough to figure that out, he deserves whatever he gets. \u201cWhat do you have for me?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI pulled Danica and North\u2019s records. I\u2019m sending them in a secure file by maildrop for you to accept. But there\u2019s nothing exceptional there to see. And before you bitch, I\u2019m digging deeper, but that will take time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat about the victim and the men in her life?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBoth her dead husband and her fianc\u00e9 have donated to various Pocher-driven campaigns. That was easy to pull. Her fianc\u00e9 has actually donated to your father\u2019s campaign. But Lilah, you\u2019d be hard pressed to find anyone in this town who hasn\u2019t pandered to Pocher\u2019s power. And that\u2019s all I have now. I\u2019m drunk. I\u2019m still drinking. No more updates tonight.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYes, but\u2014\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo,\u201d he says, \u201cand I\u2019m hanging up.\u201d He disconnects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I grimace and I\u2019d call him back, but I decide better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kane at this point has filled a whiskey glass and is leaning on the counter in front of the sink. I stand up and close the space between us. I step directly in front of him and he downs his drink and sets the glass down. His hands are on the counter behind him. He doesn\u2019t even think about touching me and I know it\u2019s about Lucas. Which is exactly why I want him to know that I\u2019m not thinking about Lucas, but rather those donations that connect Emma\u2019s fianc\u00e9 to my father. And I\u2019m thinking about his words, his declaration that we\u2019re dangerous to the Society. \u201cWhat if\u2014\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He grabs me and pulls me to him. \u201cIf you say that woman died because we\u2019re together, and turn this into another reason to take off my ring, I swear to God, Lilah, I\u2019m done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I can be hard. I can be cold. I can apparently be a killer. But I love Kane Mendez. He\u2019s hard, too. He\u2019s cold as ice. He\u2019s forever in control. But he\u2019s not those things with me. And it\u2019s in this moment, for the first time ever, I realize how much I hurt him when I left him. Just how much I cut him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI regret every moment we were apart more than you can know. He has emotions, torment I can taste on his tongue, even desperation he\u2019d allow no other human to know he\u2019s capable of feeling. I\u2019ve pushed him away. I\u2019ve hurt him. But I\u2019ve always loved him and he doesn\u2019t yet know that I\u2019m done fighting against this, against us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He just doesn\u2019t know that.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s a problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kane picks me up and I don\u2019t fight him. He has this thing about taking me to his bed, now <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bed, as if that establishes some sort of ownership of me and us. Not that I could ever be owned, but deep down, I know we own each other. We always have. We always will. And if that\u2019s what he needs, to feel that ownership, I\u2019m not at war with him. I\u2019m at war with Pocher and the Society. But he doesn\u2019t take me upstairs and to the bedroom. He walks to the living room, neutral territory, and I understand his message. The tide has shifted. The demands have changed. Either I\u2019m in this as his equal or I\u2019m not in this at all.
